Big XII: What could have been Edition
« on: August 07, 2016, 12:55:23 PM »
The year is 1996 and the Big 8 is looking to expand.  What would you do if you could do it all again?  Would you merge with SWC, poach other schools?  Expand to 10 or go to 12 teams?

Dunno if pig aggy left before the SWC disbanded or not (I think they did), but they belong in the Big XII.

Nothing could have been done. The outcome we ended up with was the only visable option with the political climate in Texas at the time.

They left five years prior.

Don't expand.  Stay at 8.  KSU, NU, and CU continue to top the polls, while recruiting the hell out of Texas.  Our TV deals will be just fine, considering that 3/8 out of the eight teams in our league are top 5/10 mainstays.  Eventually OU gets it turned around as well, making the Big 8 even more of a monster.  The Big 8 wins 9 straight national championships:

1996:  NU
1997:  NU
1998:  KSU
1999:  NU
2000:  OU
2001:  CU
2002:  KSU
2003:  OU
2004:  OU

So I'm thinking that I would've liked to pick up CSU.  They were a good team then and were usually ranked by the end of the season.  They already have an awesome rivalry with in-state CU.  That would bring the conference up to 9, but I'm not sure what to do with a 10 spot, if it was needed.  The desire to merge with SWC would still be strong, though, seeing how OU has a rivalry with UT, but with UT comes all of their politics and bullshit.

BigXII is a dead man walking.  Once Texas and OK flee the coop it's over.

You wouldn't need to add a team to go from 9 to 10. You play a round robin either way. The best thing about having CSU in a Big 9 is that we would have been able to keep Baylor out. A 13 team conference wouldn't work.

I'm not reading that but if nobody except aTm left, nobody would really give a eff. The aggies are so below Texas it kills them.

Only the Aggies left?  Lol.  You forget that Nebraska, Colorado, and Mizzou are long gone as well and aint coming back.

Not a good look for a conference trying to remain relevant as the bottom feeders of the P5.  Yeah, right, the BigXII will snatch up Clemson or FSU.  Why not court LSU or Arkansas?  Good luck with that.  Maybe Mississippi State is available.

The Texas Techs, Baylors, KSU's, ISU's, and TCU's of the world are on the verge of finding out they're no more relevant than Houston, Cincy, Memphis, UConn,or UCF to the money driven sports world of college football.  MWC or AAC anyone?   Nothing wrong with divisional rivalries with SMU, Tulsa, New Mexico, or Tulane.
