I take that back, my Dad does like watching those shows where they shoot animals in Africa.  He would probably do that, but only as part of a very organized tour package.

We're going fishing for like 200-pound perch

Funny dad story that he loves telling. He was in china for work last summer and did some touristy stuff along the way. When he went to the great wall of china he wore a green royals hat (he always chooses the green/irish/shamrock version of any hat. Side note: we're very german ) and said he was getting funny looks/points/stares all day. He figured it was because he was an American. Nope. In China, men shame themselves when their wife cheats on them by wearing a green hat in public.

my parents used to live in Ecuador, and my dad worked in Spain, Nicaragua, and Panama for a while before that (this was at least 25 years ago), so when i was growing up he would love to chat in spanish with anyone who remotely resembled a native Spanish-speaker (read: brown person) and often times it was very embarrassing when the guy at the mcdonalds register turned out to be Filipino or something.

Dads!  :D

There's one guy at our church who still greets Mrs Rex in Spanish when we visit. She speaks Spanish, so she just goes along with because "It's better than then lesbian jokes".

It's the first I've heard of this guy.  Maybe you do better keeping me informed.  Your life doesn't tell me about itself.

Surely I've told the story about my mom who told her friends, "my son is getting married to a lesbian girl", right?

Thats a great story.

ben ji's dad works in IT and had a bunch of Chinese co-workers, at some point and learned "a little" Mandarin from them. Every time we would eat at a chinese restaurant he would say the 3 mandarin words he knew to the waitress and make a big deal about how he knew Mandarin.

**** Side story ****

These chinese co-workers were all about 20 years younger than my dad and their goal was "To find a blonde american girl and marry her"(They were on work visa's and apparently if they married an american they could stay). My dad was one of their few american friends so he would take them out to bars in south overland park so they could meet their blonde girls.

They never found any blonde girls to marry  :frown:

chances you would ever get my dad to visit any of the middle east, africa, asia, south america, or central america is exactly 0%

Actual conversation at coffee shop with his rancher bros

"Has anyone around ever gone there before?"

"Well, my son."

"Yeah, but has anyone ever come back?"
My dad went to Egypt in 1980 as one last hurrah before he got married (my mom didn't want him to go), he got horrible food poisoning/diarrhea there and I think my mom has always secretly been really happy that his trip turned out that way

Email blast from FR_Dad today:

As we enter another new year, my thoughts are of past blessings, future opportunities and good friends. All are too often under appreciated. Thank you for being an integral part of each of them.

sddad says stuff like, "why would I want to visit another country when there is so much of this country I haven't and won't see" and I mean what can you say to that. Whatever makes you happy pops. hope your cow farm is still whipping ass.
