No audio so I don't really know, but it looked liked they never really let the player back in and he just took off on the breakaway and the refs let it go.

I'm all for a scrappy underdog though so go Senegal.

yeah and then ref let poland kick their free kick (that ended up being a goal) before senegal was ready. it was pretty garbage ref'ing all around

Quote from: some article
Cho Hyun-woo, though, leapt to his right to claw the ball away. The Daegu FC keeper came into the tournament as third choice before being surprisingly selected for the opening game because he is the tallest of the three keepers and the coach, Shin Tae-yong, was obsessed by Sweden’s height. Cho then gained a cult status in South Korea, where his extravagant ginger bouffant has earned him the nickname “Dae-hair”, taking the Korean word for “great” to create a pun on De Gea.
Absolute class from the Koreans here.  They really deserved more just for this alone.

I don't know many of the players, and I won't really follow them outside of the World Cup, but the World Cup itself is my favorite sporting event on earth.  I love it!  It's way better than the Olympics, in terms of inspiring nations' patriotism (not necessarily a good thing, but interesting to watch), and it's definitely better than the NCAA tournament in terms of drama and high passions from the players and fans alike.

Such fantastic entertainment.

I personally think that removing the goalies after the thirty minutes of OT and playing 10v10 would be way more interesting than a PK and closer to actual soccer. Say do it for 10 minutes without goalies or golden goal

Note I haven't thought much about this, I just think PKs are dumb.

it is currently way worse than college FB OT (which sucks pretty hard). the 25 yard line is way too close and negates elite KSU special teams.

same. also a full length of the field kick contest with no goalies. can pros put it in the net from there 100% of the time? can they all kick it that far? martin gramatica would be the best at it.

I'm not sure, but the vast majority of the countries even in the native tongue (if they are even changed at all) don't change. Best guess is if the country's name is vastly different than the anglicized version of of it/it isn't in some different alphabet then they go with that (Spain being the one that always comes to mind). That and maybe to avoid confusion with another country, but honestly that would be low.

Doesn't bother me though.

soccer with no goalies is some of the dumbest crap I've seen posted on here.

what makes it dumb?

Penalty shootouts are dumb because:

-removes 10 players
-ignores things like injuries, fatigue, red cards, etc.
-they make like 70% of them
-it's basically a coinflip of who wins
-the first 120 minutes are completely irrelevant

I always see pickup games w/o goalies, never seen a pickup pk shootout

CH stands for Confoederatio Helvetica, which is the Latin translation. since Switzerland has 4 official languages, Latin is used in order to be neutral

brazil - seems like they always win so like cheering for golden state, maybe this would be good
belgium - no
uruguay - seems like a good one, small country. should suck. but they don't.
sweden - no
england - no
france - no

you don't think removing the goalies would lead to lots of goals?

I'm not as opposed to it as some people, but I think it would result in shitty soccer with players just kicking it from deep and praying.

My alternative would be even more CFB-like with 3v3 in the penalty area.  Defense starts in the 8 yard and offense starts outside the area with the ball at the top.  When the ball leaves the area the possession is over.  They take turns.  Maybe a best of 3 then a sudden death.  Same 3 for both offense and defense.

damn, who should I cheer for now?

brazil - seems like they always win so like cheering for golden state, maybe this would be good
belgium - no
uruguay - seems like a good one, small country. should suck. but they don't.
sweden - no
england - no
france - no
russia - MAGA! no
croatia - they have a uruguay feel but not as good of one. so no.
colombia - see uruguay above

my new teams in order: uruguay, colombia, croatia, brazil

the colombian fans have been the best but i think they just lost their best player  :frown:

sweden is great. they weren't even supposed to qualify and now they're in the quarterfinal, why are they an automatic no in the sd system?

because eff sweden, that's why mocat

Just some good footy but will probably find myself rooting for England, Belgium, France and any underdog. Can't wait, CF3!

instead of a 30 minute overtime and then penalty kicks they should do two 15 minute overtimes and then sudden death, but with no goalkeepers allowed.

maybe to touch (dribble?) but I don't think they should be allowed to carry the ball.

Every five minutes a random player from each team is removed.

If the game ends in regulation as a draw both teams lose and have to sit out the next World Cup.
