8-man Football
« on: August 23, 2017, 01:29:12 PM »
A thread for HFBIQ-types to discuss plays and concepts.

The first entry is pretty soft, but look forward to lots of exciting scheming.

https://www.footballstudyhall.com/2017/5/22/15666628/secrets-of-bill-snyder-ball-the-defensive-line-jordan-willis-reggie-walker-will-geary-wizard

Quote
If homegrown DL Walker and Dishon make leaps as sophomores rather than enduring slumps while Snyder’s staff builds around them and local products like DTs Will Geary and Mitch Copeland or DEs Tanner Wood and Kyle Ball have strong years then there’s a chance that Snyder could ride off into the sunset after winning one last Big 12 title.

The author, Ian Boyd, is a Texas alum and knows Cat football pretty well.

From Prizell Brown and Brandon Harold in 2010 to Jordan Willis and Reggie Walker last year!

Not true.

That's a really good piece, though the Xs and Os part is pretty minimal, its more of a personnel piece. I do like how they breakdown the ways we use our front 4 plus inside backer to attempt to slow down the inside gaps against spread teams and the issues with defending the old rapey version of Baylor are spot on.

I am anxious to see what changes/adjustments will be made to this year's offense. With more experience from everyone, this will allow for more variety to what we saw last year. Of course, many of these may go unnoticed because a lot of it will consist of reads and options made by the QB presnap moreso than additional plays to the offensive package, basically running the same stuff, but in more ideal situations because we can better anticipate the defense.

I understand most college football teams will be better with a returning QB, but aren't the numbers when Snyder has a returning senior (do we consider Jimmy a SR?) starter at QB pretty staggering? I would guess it's in correlation with a few of these subtle things.

Yes.

I put this together at the end of last year, the last row has Ertz's projections based on average improvements for all the other Snyder QBs.

Also, for review, here are where K-State finished in Big 12 only offensive/defensive stats using collegefootballstudyhall.com's 5 factors and a few other stats:

5 Factors and winning below:

Factor   Win as predictor%

PpP (Explosiveness)   71.1%
Success Rate (Efficiency)   70.0%
Field Position (Avg. Starting Field Position)   63.1%
Finishing Drives (Pts. Per Drive Inside 40)   53.0%
Turnovers (Havoc Rate)   51.0%

*I am not using havoc rate for turnovers, just simple TO margin.

IIRC, ob was all about yards per completion back in the day

Yep, that's right. I can't imagine how bad we'd get destroyed by Big 12 opponents playing that style.

thanks for humoring me, _FAN.

i like this pitch read(fake) on the counter trey, it seems like a substantial improvement on the typical read. i've never noticed it before and it seems like an easy addition to the cat playbook.

True, but we have some counter trey wrinkles.

Here some stuff I broke down in 2012. We used a lot of these concepts last year with Ertz.

the puns are his work's only blemish.

The pitch also gives the QB a better look at the pass option if you want to make it an RPO. It's Ell's speed option/slant except the QB can get his feet under him. Everyone will be running it, but it suits us particularly well.

here's some Xs and Os for you HFBIQ'ers. my HS had a pretty complex system. 22 dive? well here's the thing, not as simple as it sounds. in that play we run dive (basically just blast ahead for tons of yards) by handing to the fullback (2 dude) and he runs through the first hole to the right of the center (2 hole). most of my team was super intelligent at sports so we picked this stuff up after a few weeks of practice.

Lead 4G was easily the greatest high school football play ever.   That pulling guard getting the kickout block on that unsuspecting 3 technique brings a tear to my eye every time.
