2014 Handicapping Thread -- Degenerates ONLY
« on: August 28, 2014, 10:48:35 AM »
This isn't a place to come in and mush people's picks or kick mofos when they're already down after a cold streak... Post your thoughts, picks and any inside angles you have here, though!

Every week, I spend hours crunching numbers and consulting with The512 of shaggybevo.com fame to come up with what we believe to be the best plays on the board and I know we have some damn fine 'cappers here as well.  So, post what ya got and feel free to tail our selections at your own risk.

I'm no betting expert here, but taking gambling advice from homer horns fans who pick bevo to win it all at the beginning of every season probably isn't a very wise move.  Other talking heads I typically ignore:  Mel Kiper Jr., Mark Sclabach, and Phil Steele.  I say be a man, crunch your numbers, But always go with your gut.

I have a lucky coin. I assign one team to heads and the other to tails, and then I flip. Whichever side is facing up is the team I place my money on. When the Cats are playing, I have a super special coin that has heads on both sides. I give the Cats heads, and then flip that coin. That way I know my money will be in LHC Bill Snyder's safe hands.

You clearly haven't spent much time over at the shag.  They talk more crap on their program than OU does.

See my earlier post, but Tulane +7 and Ole Miss -9.5/10 should be good plays.

Nice. I wanna make sure if I bet on a game, it's on TV.  :)

That's not a very profitable strategy long term...  They'll be enough games we play on TV, but there's no way to watch em all anyway.  Play the spots with the best value.

Didn't end up playing K-State as it went to -40.5 by the time my guy posted it... Glad I layed off.

Posted plays thus far:  8-5-2

Bookie, where do you get your lines from?  Does one site usually get them up sooner than another?  I know they can move a bunch!  Do you prefer to wait and see or go with a number you like and kick yourself when you could have gotten more?

I play whatever line I get from my guy.  With that said, at times I'll put a play in early based on what we think a line will do based on public perception or how far off we think the line is.  Other times, we'll make a later play if the market moves a line far enough that the math says we have a big enough edge.

Make sense?

Got it.  I haven't bet for a few years and remember always either placing the bet early, then it moving and I would miss it and should have waited, or the other way.  I guess this is where numbers crunching and real research really comes into play.

Never forgot my first bet was a five team basketball parlay nailed it, thought I could have big plans making money in Vegas!  Next day I was broke again... Learned that one the hard way!
