Essentially Flyertalk / Chings B-Day / 4 Olives / Egg / Baseball Pak
« on: April 19, 2010, 02:39:18 PM »
So I made it back to Manhattan this week for a pretty epic event -- Chingon turned 50!*  As expected, good times were had by all.

(*Just spitballing here - no clue how old he really is)

We started the Pak off with a fancy surprise dinner at 4 Olives where WRFF met up with Mr. KK.  Mr. KK had a very fetching Rodney Dangerfield look going, while WRFF was all over the proper protocol here as well (someone who shall remain nameless showed up in shorts  ).  Thanks to the stimulating dinner conversation, the night flew by.  (We laughed several times at the non-elites who didn't make the invitation cut.)

Next morning was Eggpak (pt. 2) with some fantastic brunch at Chingon's before eventual trip to take in the BatKatz destroy Baylor.  Following are some photos from said BatKatz game:

Beautiful Tointon Family Stadium.

Willie the Wildcat.

Weird Robert yelling at the Baylor players.  In this photo, I believe he was calling for a double play with two outs.

WRFF with the wife.  (Note elite goEMAW.com attire.)

Chingon with his own invention -- combofan baseball. (Note the knuckleball handsign addition to the standard lynch mob sign.)  Also of note: Chings performed a double fist pump whilst doing the Wabash during the 7th inning stretch.  The spectacle of this was simply awe-inspiring.

Later that evening we enjoyed Little Apple's 15th Anniversary with close friend Wally Judge (he's ready to dominate next year :ksu:) before finishing our night with drinks at Aggieville.

Pretty great 'Pak, all in all.   :users:

I'm not sure I agree with all of his methodology or his conclusions, but it is fun to think about the games we'll get to see next year between these three programs ... and that they're all seemingly distancing themselves further from the rest of the Nortards.

I don't really see it.  I mean, some of our more vocal and idiot fans may grumble some about "doing things the right way", but so long as Martin keeps winning, that won't matter.  Moreover, we may see more teams try to employ this slowdown crap which kind of plays in our favor ... we don't need other teams trying to out junkyard kat us.  Let them play it slow and try to muck things up -- we'll oboard them to death (if we aren't exhausted from 2OT thrillers).  Plus, if they win it all, it doesn't make them a better program anymore than NC State's fluke win two and half decades ago did for them.  They're still NC State.  Butler will still be Butler.  They were good enough to win it all once every five generations when the stars aligned perfectly.  Good for them.

I get the sister school thing and all that, but I'm honestly pretty  :dunno: about picking sides tonight.  Just want a good game.

Jerome Tang Coaches Kansas State Basketball / Beard confidence

I love how whenever I get to thinking, "Oh noes, so-and-so player is good, we might get upset!", I can just think about Pullen and relax.  Dude will score a ton, limit the other team's best guard, and basically just "god" us into victory.

Beard confidence.  It comes from having the best player in the tournament on your team.

Watching UNC vs. William and Mary and enjoying the heck out of it.  I'm glad that I can sit back and enjoy some decent hoops action without having to be embarrassed for my alma mater being associated with a second-tier tournament.

Maybe it's partly because the world in general is better as a No. 2 seed?  Air is cleaner.  Colors are brighter.  And the NIT is entertaining.

First their QB goes all Cam Newton and now this:

http://blogs.nfl.com/2010/03/11/blount-fails-to-attend-oregons-pro-day/

Gotta admit I'm pretty jealous.  Add in their sweet and/or terrible unis and Nike money (and having Donald the Duck as a mascot), and they're pretty much the perfect team to root for.  Damn them.

At least we stole back Harper.

Jerome Tang Coaches Kansas State Basketball / RE: Samuels and Sutton
« on: March 11, 2010, 10:43:16 AM »
Lots of talk lately in the media about Sutton and Samuels being the key to our success, and it sort of annoys me.  I mean, hasn't it been obvious for months now that this is the case?

Clemente and Pullen bring the same thing to the table every game.  If they're hitting shots, it certainly helps, but the team can still win when they aren't.

The "true" bigs are somewhat consistent.  Kelly has his lapses, but he's still good for 10 and 5 just about every night out and his defense isn't too brutal either.  Wally is still a foul-fest but brings sick athleticism, JHR is long and mucks things up, and Lu can be an enforcer (in small doses).

Energy and McGruds are what they are at this point, as are Irving and Russell - guys that know their roles.

But you just never know what the hell you're going to get out of Sutton or Samuels.  I firmly believe that when those two are "on", we are pretty much unbeatable.  When one is on and one is off, we're vulnerable.  When both are off, we're going down, and we're going down hard.  So why is the media running with this now?  Because of the last two games?  I've got news for everyone: we go as our wings go.  This has pretty much always been the case under Martin/Huggins and it probably always will be.  Why the heck do they think Martin recruits that kind of player so hard?  It's not for their rogueish good looks and wonderful smell (though those things DO help).

I dunno.  /rant

Can't say I disagree with him.

Jerome Tang Coaches Kansas State Basketball / A year later
« on: February 24, 2010, 05:28:39 PM »
Was thinking about how great life is at No. 6 today   but then remembered how last year ended and got a little   :ohno:  What has changed since last year?  For all the talk of depth on the roster, I think it's simply a matter of the starters getting better.

Here's kenpom's ranking of the 2009-10 and 2008-09 Cats:

                                                                                                 STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE      NON-CONF SOS
Rnk Team                 Conf   W-L   Pyth    AdjO/Rnk  AdjD/Rnk    Cons/Rnk  Luck/Rnk   Pyth/Rnk  OppO/Rnk  OppD/Rnk    Pyth/Rnk

  9 Kansas St.            B12  23-4  .9571   116.7/10   89.1/22     16.0/22  -.010/192  .7639/6   106.5/14   96.2/13    .5912/104

 44 Kansas St.           B12  22-12 .8631   109.2/65   93.0/42     27.6/341 -.027/222  .6608/75  105.0/64   99.1/86    .4028/282

Obviously, the offense is way better than last year (as has been discussed), but the consistency jump is even bigger.  It's sort of ridiculous, actually.  That's a clear indication that the entire team is doing well from game to game, but looking at some of the offensive efficiency numbers of the players, it seems like the "starting" 5's offensive efficiency has gone up (four players at 108 rating or higher vs. one in 08-09) while the "backups"' have gone down (two players at 104 rating or higher vs. four in 08-09).

What does this mean?  It means Jake, Kelly, Clemente, JamSam and Sutton are dominating, but that last year's team was actually "deeper" than this one.  Our depth is good, but it could be problematic if the "big 5" get into foul trouble.  Glad we've got Colon starting and hacking the heck out of people.  :driving:

Essentially Flyertalk / What do you eat when you're sick?
« on: February 23, 2010, 09:37:11 AM »
Not looking for jello or chicken soup here, gtfoomf.

Me and the wifey make a bunch of spicy food to get things running.  Alternatively, I eat chicken mcnuggets when I'm having trouble keeping anything down -- those frackers go into your stomach and they don't leave.

What are some things you eat when sick that normal types may not think of?

Jerome Tang Coaches Kansas State Basketball / Remember when...

Remember when Dickie V called Bramlage Coliseum a "rolls royce", and our entire fan base creamed its collective shorts because there was literally nothing else positive about our basketball program to hang our hats on?    :frown:

Let's never go back to being like that again.   :driving:

I'm tired of losing early in the Phillips 66.  Who do we want to stay away from so that we avoid a similar fate this year?

I'm thinking Texas because we will stubbornly press Balbay and surrender constant dribble drives to them.  Plus they will be amped to knock us out a 2nd straight year and get revenge for their OOD loss.

Jerome Tang Coaches Kansas State Basketball / Massa Self does it again

His unbelievable ability at taking lottery talents and turning them into 4-year players strikes again!

http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=172&f=2481&t=5572606

What cracks me up is all their fans assume the guy is going to be around another season or 3 and think nothing of it ... and they're of course right because Self ruins careers.

That's the impression I get from reading that, anyway.  Got a long way to go to really earn the title of angriest fans in America, imho.

On a somewhat related note, we need a burning couch emoticon for WVU.

Essentially Flyertalk / Brunch?
« on: January 29, 2010, 11:18:09 AM »
Thoughts?

I sorta hate it.  I'd rather have breakfast AND lunch, not combine them into one weird hybrid.

There are good brunch places in NOLA, which I tell myself to enjoy, but brunch usually just doesn't cut it (unless I'm hung over).
