"The Obelisk" was erected by some unknown entity before Western civilization penetrated the rugged flint hills. Over time, a public farm school was erected around it to better understand the capabilities of life-sustaining dirt. That school eventually became Kansas State University, and though its traditions are known well by its admirers across as many as three area codes, the origins of The Obelisk remain shrouded in mystery.
