Glen Beck
« on: February 13, 2010, 02:37:21 PM »
Tuned in to the opening segment and saw Beck railing against Ireland, Greece, Portugal and their deficits as percentage of GDP, their overwhelming government interventions/levels of taxation/lack of economic freedoms and points to the U.S. as a future victim of such maladies.

It is unsurprising to see such ignorance on display, for instance Ireland was just recently touted as one of the freest economies in the world when they lured in Microsoft and other companies as a tax shelter with low corporate tax rates.

Meanwhile, Germany has a deficit that will hit a post-war record and Beck makes no mention of them, except to say that they are being asked to bail out the Greeks (presumably because they are the 4th largest economy in the world).

Why does Beck not take issue with Germany?  Maybe because they have 1)  enormous government interventions in the economy including a VAT and enormous government investment in infrastructure and a healthcare/welfare state   2)  some of the largest government mandated union/worker-right interventions of any European country  3)  most importantly, they have probably the most stable and successful economy in the EU, thanks in large part to: an enormous engineering/manufactoring export base, a well-regulated (intrusively regulated) banking and investment in infrastructure and research

If anyone can argue that Germany's economy does not easily clear the bar for "socialist" by even the classical economic definition, then I would love to hear the evidence to the contrary.

The real point is that Beck is unwilling to confront the enormous holes in his theses about the impending doom for European and American economies and what remedies would best alter this course of destruction.  Instead, he spends his time building elaborate conspiracies and straw men so that he can tear them down.  I don't know whether he really has no understanding of the fundamental issues or that he remains cynically ignorant to enrich himself.

Either way, he's an enormous douche and so are the people that ignorantly rinse and repeat his rants.

Dont really take him seriously, same with Rush and O'Reilly. They're entertainers, thats why there on TV, nothing more.

Big fan of Ireland though. Got plastered with an Irish guy on his honeymoon a couple years ago on a cruise ship. We started talking college basketball and he couldnt get a grasp on recruiting, he kept saying "But if you dont pay them why would they go there?"(He had heard of Beasley and was wondering why he went to Kansas State. He also dispelled the Guiness myth, most irish people drink Miller Lite at bars according to him)

I can't imagine anyone in Europe drinking Miller/Coors/Bud/Other crap American beer.  Was drinking with a guy from Germany and he damn near spit out the "American pisswater"

it happens.  the local grocery has american and mexican beers for like 3 times the price of way better domestics.  the mexicans, especially, seem semi-popular among youngsters who want to experience a new world night or something.

Insightful argument.  Akin to "you spelled 'lunatic' wrong"

Heaviest Element Yet Known to Science Discovered

February 15, 2010 - 14:09 ET

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California has now identified with certainty the heaviest element known to science.

The new element, Pelosium (PL), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.

Pelosium is inert, and has no charge and no magnetism. Nevertheless, it can be detected because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Pelosium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete.

Pelosium has a normal half-life of 2 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a biennial reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.

Pelosium mass will increase over time, since each reorganization will promote many morons to become isodopes.

This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Pelosium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass.

When catalyzed with money, Pelosium becomes Senatorium, an element that radiates just as much energy as Pelosium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

Excellent CPAC keynote speech without a teleprompter. I have to say I was pretty impressed.

I hope Obama was watching the part about the great depression.  :driving:

This is my favorite talking point when it comes to Beck.  As if his radio show gives him a free pass for being a jackass on TV.

what's the lesson?  to make sure you get into a world war subsequent to the depression?

It worked for FDR and allowed him to gain popularity because of it.  Sad that he gets so much false credit.

I still don't understand Beck's position.  Learn from the Past?  WTF?  Today is nothing like the 20's/30's.

I guess you're supposed to learn from the  past after the depression, not before.  I mean, jfc, this isn't that hard….congress made/forced/allowed (however you want to phrase it) banks to lend money (over the course of two administrations) and then eased or allowed for banks to structure themselves and their transactions in ways that allowed them to maintain their risk based capital even though they were taking on more risk, so wtf did they expect banks to do?  not make money?  So the banks go out and give crap loads of money out...those loans are then securitized and packaged in the market allowing access to basically the entire market....so effectively, you've packaged your risky assests under the guise of highly rated securities.....so then when growth doesn't meet the level of risk taken, the sh*t hits the fan....and guess what?  since everyone now bought into those sh*tty assets in various ways, they've now got to meet their own obligations, whether it be credit swaps or whether it be capital ratios...so they then have to sell their assets...all the while people are defaulting on their loans, causing those "non risky" securitized assets to fail and the companies that hold those assets to write them down...affecting their own books...causing people to lose their job...creating a nice little cycle of sh*t......so is that the lesson?

Glen Beck is a Jerry Springer episode with a political agenda.
