I'm curious if it would still be cool if it was his GF or wife or something. is it the fact that it's random people looking at it?

Same reason some dudes are flashers.  Likely a sense of power or control.

how would showing someone your dick make you feel powerful?

You are controlling the situation and what they are looking at.

I think there are 2 camps here. The power people you describe are likely the flashers and people that take advantage of their position or status.

Outing myself as a sexual deviant (big surprise) but I enjoy exhibitionism and personally power isn't important to me. I also have no interest in participating with someone who doesn't want to watch. My enjoyment comes from turning them on (which I suppose could be considered "power"). To answer sd's question, yes, it's just as enjoyable with a committed partner. But there is also a subsect of exhibitionists that like when the watcher is disinterested or ignoring them and I'm just as mystified about the payoff there.

OK, the AL Franken thing is more like that SNL skit where the director is getting an award and they show some of his PSA's from the 80's. It was a different time when things that we now realize were not appropriate were considered appropriate at the time.

I don't think a 30 year old fondling a 14 year old was ever appropriate.

Not Al Franken too!

Yeah, not great.

But I will say it again ,we're going to have to decide how bad each kind of level these things are. No excuse for Al, but is that as bad as let's say Moore? Or as bad as Louis CK? Rape? There's just levels of this stuff.

I guess overall what I'm getting at is if you drew up a list of guys (or girls for that matter) who haven't inappropriately touched a member of the opposite sex, or same sex if they're into that, that list would be very very small. Hell even I've had my crotch grabbed a few times at parties or the bar, and my ass grabbed a handful of times. People do stupid stuff, but I am not sure that makes them some giant sexual deviant. You shouldn't do it, but I don't know how much of your life should be ruined over it.

I am glad though that people are being more willing to speak up and talk about it, that kind of stuff will help lead hopefully to more productive ground rules on how to do this, though we will go through a period of this crazy crap for a while.

Al Franken didn't commit the worst of these crimes but it sounds like he did some shitty things he deserves to be called out on.  On some level, I get that "it was a different time" but his behavior was still shitty, particularly for someone who wants to carry the flag as being progressive.  I don't think this is a democrat problem or republican problem as some people have tried to frame it.  It can become a partisan issue though if the politicians aren't held to a higher standard.  I don't know that Franken needs to resign but I wouldn't be sad to see it happen.

I would agree with a lot of that. For Al I don't think it is necessarily a resignable offense, but if he did, it would be a powerful statement. Also totally agree it shouldn't be a partisan problem, nor is it some problem resigned to just the rich and powerful.
