From my childhood neighborhood. :frown:

He and his wife often drove the neighborhood caravan to school for us back in middle school/early high school.

This is still a running joke in Western Joco circles.

Where's Bob at? Don't know, probably pulled a schnackenberg.

That was really a weird deal. I saw him at a gas station literally minutes before he went missing and he seemed completely normal. No one really knows what happened there.

Lotta rumors about financial stuff but I dont know for sure.

The weird coincidence is the park ranger at Shawnee Mission park who found him used to be the bball coach for one of his sons.

Thought I heard that the impetus for him disappearing was that he had been caught meeting another guy at the park for non-park related activities.

Yeah.  His daughter had to postpone her wedding while they looked for him and then any time he was questioned by authorities about why he disappeared he would just break down and not say why.  Wiens is why.  And I'm not talking about Kent.

Not sure. SB parents live in the same neighborhood in MHK. Not sure exactly what he did for a job but I know it was with Frito Lay because back in the day he would sometimes get to drive the truck. We would see this enormous boxy truck drive through our hood at night with Doritos and Fritos bags on the side. Was very :D

Anyway, I don't think her tweet says they found him, only that she is grateful for the people around. Not sure, though. :frown: Hopefully he's just in a Walter White fugue state.

I have no clue who this lady is.

Neither do I, but given the sitch, the tweets seem wildly crazy.  I mean, I would be a mess, and I would also be out and about looking for my significant other until someone was found or declared dead.  I mean, that sounds extreme and crazy things happen where ppl are "missing" for years, but it's been like two weeks and she is lol'ing on twitter in the same 140 characters that she discusses her husband being missing.  That is psycho.

It seems strange that this odd social media maven and apparently popular professor wouldn't wish to publicize this, you know, to make it easier to find him. Like, it wouldn't require that much effort for her. Maybe she is, I don't know.

Guys just cause she's not crying in front of a podium doesn't mean that she's not trying hard to find him. The missing persons cases made public are like <1% of all missing persons cases. The only reason this is public in the first place is because of who she is, not because of what has happened.

the only real logical explanation is that he just ran off and she's known it all along.  she told a couple friends that he left and she doesn't know where he is and the rumor took off.  it's really not that much of a stretch for a story to go from "my husband hasn't been home since labor day and I don't know where he is but we were having problems and I'm sure he just left" to "kelly welch's husband is missing."

You're right where's the frumpy, stoic, distraught spouse? Why isn't she outside with a stack of missing person fliers  and a staple gun? How come her make-up isn't running down her face and why isn't she in an oversized t-shirt with a picture of Dave on it?

I mean, is there a rulebook on how long you have to wait before trying to reestablish a sense of normalcy? Maybe she thinks that she's going to alienate by constantly being sad?  Maybe, heaven forbid, she needed to inject some humor into her life. I don't know. Yes, it was IMO unusual, but jesus. We're acting like this is Casey Anthony dancing on nightclub tables while her daughter is "missing".

especially considering that the first person authorities look at when questionable things like this happen is the spouse.

Also, it's all about reference.  She didn't tweet just about Bo, she threw it in at the end of a tweet about her missing husband.

I understand saying weird stuff or joking awkwardly in order to make light of a horrible situation.  Everybody handles it differently.

What I do not understand is how the most important person in her life (outside of her kids I would assume) has been missing for a couple weeks and fliers aren't being distributed, media isn't informed, etc.  Hell if Mrs. WNK or a good friend went missing for a couple weeks (with no notice or communication) I'd start turning over every rock because sadly I would only assume something very bad has happened.  This is the part I just don't understand.  Where are the 200+ people search parties combing fields and wooded areas?

Once again I understand how people say awkward things to put light of a horrible situation, but I do not understand why rocks aren't being turned over searching for the guy.

Yeah, I saw a photo of that guy where he had these big spacers in his ears, which means he does drugs, probably.  So, I speculated that he went out for a "jog" and was actually shooting heroin behind an abandoned building or something.  Turns out he had a heart defect.  So, yeah, I've been wrong before.

I solved that brain buster on the first page.

Yeah.  His daughter had to postpone her wedding while they looked for him and then any time he was questioned by authorities about why he disappeared he would just break down and not say why.  Wiens is why.  And I'm not talking about Kent.

Or maybe his slam piece had a dong and zero hoots.

I'm sticking with my theory that this went from her telling a couple friends that he left and she doesn't know where he is, to "he's missing."  it's the only theory that explains everything.

Letting it grow to "he's missing" as well as sharing the details about when he was last seen and what he was driving if she knows he just left her is definitely stupid and batshit crazy. Not "murder" crazy but not that far off.

I'll give you that describing the last place he was seen and what he was driving seems crazy, but do we have any confirmation that she's the one that released those details.  did she do that on twitter or something because I didn't see that.

also, you don't have any control over what happens to a rumor once it gets started.  she may be too embarrassed to go on twitter and tell everyone that they've been having problems and she's pretty sure he just left her.  thanking everyone for their support and then cracking a joke may be her way of telling people not to worry.

Um, when you have 6k+ followers and a mention list that looks like this:

https://twitter.com/search?q=%40DrKellyWelch&src=typd&f=realtime

You absolutely can do something about it. Like, uh, say. I don't know, "I appreciate the support, but my husband and I have separated. He left on his own and I'm no longer communicating with him." Maybe change your twitter photo to something that isn't your husband that just left your family in the dust. Sure it's embarassing and sad, but you aren't wasting law enforcement's time. After that, crack all the jokes you want.

Maybe she just likes all the prayers people are sending her way?

My son had her as professor for the family thingy course. He said she was great it was one of his favorites while at K-state :-)

I don't know what is going on with her personal life right now but I know if my husband went missing then I would be sick to death. To death. I don't want to stir the pot but if she is faking like some of you think (quite insensitively I might add) then maybe its because her career will take a hit? By that I mean she will feel she can no longer speak with authority on family issues? Either way I pray for his safe return and I have faith in God that it will all turn out for the best. I also pray for their children, hopefully they won't have to grow up without a father.

I'll give you that describing the last place he was seen and what he was driving seems crazy, but do we have any confirmation that she's the one that released those details.  did she do that on twitter or something because I didn't see that.

We know she hasn't refuted them.

also, you don't have any control over what happens to a rumor once it gets started.  she may be too embarrassed to go on twitter and tell everyone that they've been having problems and she's pretty sure he just left her.  thanking everyone for their support and then cracking a joke may be her way of telling people not to worry.

I haven't been following her on twitter so I guess I don't really know how much she's aware of the speculation that's going around.

In other sad K-State faculty news, Dr. John Graham (finance professor) was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer last night  :frown:

pancreatic is no good. inoperable probably means a couple of months. t's and p's.

The doctor said 3-30.  Last week some (likely) dumbass doctor told him it was pneumonia.

He needs weed, avocados, and blueberries.

I found the "may have dementia" language unusual.  I mean I'm certainly no brain doctor, but if someone is to the point of wandering off and becoming lost aren't you pretty rough ridin' sure they have dementia before that?  Like you know he has it right?  Rus is probably right, that immediate onset spontaneous dementia that's been going around.  Oh no, LHCLHCBS!  This can't be a coincidence.  Too localized.  Go cats I guess.

Prayer maximization strategy? Get just enough prayer to find the car and then mention the dementia to really open the prayer floodgates?
Title: Re: Kelly Welch's Husband Missing...
Post by: Mr Bread on September 17, 2013, 09:44:47 PM
That's a pretty quick hook there for a lost dementia guy.  Two days and already giving up hope?  I would think the best case scenario for a several days missing safe return would be a lost confused grown man driving around in a burgundy minivan.  Not much of a car jacking target.  If he had crashed and been injured someone would have seen it by now you would think.  Kidnapping?  Not likely.

Why not provide a last known location or destination?  It all seems so half-assed.  Yet as mc points out she has maximized her prayer output.  I mean she's really got the ts and ps firing on all cylinders.  There is more than one way to skin a cat, which is gross and confusing to me, but people say it.

Not familiar w that, but I used to work with a guy who had drug issues.  His fav thing to do was relapse into using, hop trains to Colorado, get as drunk and high as he could, then come back after a couple weeks.

Same guy tried to make his jeans into cut offs one hot day with a box knife while wearing them and ended up almost cutting an artery in his thigh and going to the hospital for a bunch of stitches.

Do bi-polar people get random bouts of dementia?

And, obvs, if this happens all the time, u don't say things like "losing hope for his safe return."

In my extremely limited sample of one friend, he will do fine for a year or two and then get feeling really good and think he doesn't need his meds anymore.  He will either hit bottom (depressant) or go manic.  Severe manic can bring on psychosis which I think is kinda like dementia.  Of course I am purely speculating on a couple twitter messages and my experience with a friend I see every couple months.

I kind of enjoy speculating as to what might have happened to this woman's husband?  Hell, we've got about 100 pages speculating on why Snyds isn't starting Sams and I've never met either one of those guys.

I think she killed him, personally.  Probably chained to a cinerblock at the bottom of Tuttle, if I had to guess.

Remember that Chad Rodgers guy that disappeared running and they found in a porta potty?  Went round and round with a coworker speculating.  She thought he offed himself because he was secretly gay, had been bad touched, something like that.  I thought he was out for a run, wasn't feeling well, and wen't somewhere for privacy, and died.  Turns out Emo is pretty good at guessing what happened in situaishes like this.

That is what I figured happened to Rodgers too, but never did hear the final word on that.

valvular heart disease I think

Well, so wtf happened to this sorry sob?  Predict already.

I'm going to hold off on a prediction until the details come out that allow me to retroactively say I was right.

(Really I just need more details before I throw something out there.)

You're worthless at this.  Not cool to lie about things you can do.

I did (seriously) get the runner guy one right.  I didn't guess chronic health issue, more of a heat stroke/over heating/organ failure/crap his guts out, but I think I was close enough?

I'll read the next two pages of this thread and make a prediction.

On September 2, 2013 at approximately 8:30 PM, David Welch, 54, of Manhattan, Kansas left his home in a maroon Pontiac Montana van with Kansas license plates without expressing where he was going to friends and family. Riley County Police were contacted and when made aware, checked areas around Manhattan for Welch but were unsuccessful in locating him. At the time of the initial call to police, there was no reason to believe that he was in danger. On September 3, 2013, police were contacted by Welch's family and informed that he had not returned home. At this time officers confirmed that there was no reason to believe Welch was currently in danger of harm or had known medical issues that may cause him to be in danger.  Riley County Police notified law enforcement agencies in areas around the country where it was possible that Welch may have gone. A police information report for missing persons was filed on September 6, 2013. Riley County Police briefed the local media of the filing of this report on September 9, 2013. As of September 18, 2013, David Welch is still considered missing and those with information are encouraged to contact the Riley County Police Department by phone at (785) 537-2112.

also, the police then waited an additional 3 days to go to press for help.  7 days missing before they made it public through media.

Also, no social media stuff from kids with dad missing?

No coworker stuff?  Where is Dave?  Calls to see where he is?  Do nothing when wife says "oh, he's just completely missing and stuff".

This all wreaks of her knowing something and smoothing it all out with everyone else connected to him.

I honestly have no idea what any of this could mean. Both RCPD and Welch seem like liars, or at least truth stretchers.

Also, we talk about all kinds of current happenings on this blog.  Why set this aside?  If you notice, I don't believe anyone made much mention of it for the first week and a half or so, giving it the respect most believe it deserves.  The conversation really didn't get moving until it started getting known that it is pretty weird.

Agreed it seems really weird.  And I don't mean to tuck out, but I don't think we should make fun of this situation.  This blog has done some tremendously charitable things in the past and I think the efforts would be better focused on that.  Now that doesn't mean we can't call weirdness when it appears weird. But when we don't know all the facts, and it possibly pertains to a disease/condition which makes things get REALLY weird, I think people should air on the side of caution.

Most bloggers here have pretty consistently said they'd love nothing more than to get some facts and help, or at least hope for a positive outcome.  Unfortunately, all that's being offered to people that would want to help is vague, sometimes contradictory tweets with some HuskHur Hur Hur (get it?) mixed in.

EDIT: Damnit EMO, that's what I get for not just leaving it at :D

“Dave, Sweetheart, if you see or hear this…..just know that we are all here waiting with open arms for you to return. I know you’re hurting….but we’re a great team, you and me, and we’ve weathered worse storms than what you’re going through now. After 37 years together, you’re half my heart and right now I can only take it minute by minute. I need you home. The grandbaby needs her Papa home. WE LOVE YOU. Please, please, please come back to us.”

Please contact Riley County Police Department by phone at (785) 537-2112 with any information. RCPD is treating the situation as a normal missing person’s case, and no foul play is thought to be involved.

I mean, I guess. The timing is still pretty strange. It's almost like there was a miscommunication between her and RCPD (2+ weeks ago). Like, they said, "don't do this all on your own" and she heard "do nothing" and then after the Pelini tweet people started asking questions and they got back together and RCPD was like, "um, you can reach out to media and stuff if you'd like", and she's all "oh, ok. Miss you, dave."

It seems like, if he has mental/psychological issues, the longer it drags on the harder it would be for him to come back. After a couple days it wouldn't seem as huge of a deal but it's been a long time. Hopefully he can overcome that.

So they found him but can't get him back? Was he coming off a huge bender in Area 51 or something?

Here's my theory: He watched Breaking Bad and decided to go hunt those coordinates of WW's money. In a round about turn of events, he was getting pak'd and sleeping in his van in the middle of the desert. Then aliens came and picked him up, took him to A51 to continue the pak. With the government being shutdown and such, the employees of A51 started just driving around and found him in his van.

The End.

He randomly drove to Utah (sometimes a man just has to rough ridin' drive you know?) and happened to get in a fatal accident (sometimes bros don't drive so good), but not before he was able to write a bunch of goodbye notes (nothing unusual about this part).  This crap happens every damn day.

I may be out in left field here, but has anyone thought that maybe he wrote the notes then drove his van into the ravine? It was publicly stated that he had mental issues so that can't be too far out there of a theory right?

Just spitballin here though...seems pretty wild that he took off, no cell, no credit cards, health issues and ended up being able to travel halfway across the US and end up in a wreck where his vehicle fell over 50' into a ravine. How did he eat or buy gas or sleep? Just bumming in his van? THEN, to top it all off, he had enough consciousness to find something to write with and something to write on and write notes to his family. I'm just saying that it's a hard, hard story to believe.

The O&M manuals from the '00 Pontiac van shows OnStar as a standard feature. Now I'm not sure if it was still hooked up or any other details, but its interesting if they had the capability to track but didn't do it.

iirc gm  started installing Onstar on everything. However,  the ones before 2005ish all use analog radios that were shut off a  few years ago and it is unlikely this can had been upgraded with the digital parts gm offers for older vehicles.

He (just as LHCBS would) handwrote some letters in a wrecked van as his last act to be discovered later by an angel disguised as a hitchhiker.

I'm not sure I was hur hur hur'ing. If it was taken that way, so be it. Losing a loved one sucks. I'm sorry that Dr. Welch and her family are going through this. That being said, I don't think she is ready to deal with the reality of the situation to do shock and/or grief. I think her thoughts on the events surrounding this unfortunate situation will become more rational with time. However, a statement to the effect of "we're just happy to have closure", would have been sufficient.

Well, it's kind of answered.  The guy had dementia, but for some reason that was omitted by those who knew it hen the cops "confirmed that there was no reason to believe Welch was currently in danger of harm or had known medical issues that may cause him to be in danger."  So either the writer of this cnn article missed that part or chose to omit it to make for a better story.  Either way, anyone reading that is thinking as they go, "this seems weird" and waiting for the explanation, only to get to the conclusion of "a lot of questions remain."

Either one are worthy of being noted in a cnn story about the whole ordeal, which is what I'm talking about today.  I was reading through that article waiting for them to get to all the inconsistencies in it all, and then it was just "welp, weird, run credits."

there are ways to handle these types of situations that don't involve talking to gate agents and standing in line. when you know your flight is going to be delayed or canceled immediately call the carrier, don't go wait in the line or talk to the agent. have another phone ready with available flights with any carrier, if they tell you that they don't work with that carrier (usually SW who works with nobody) tell them you will book it OOP and get confirmation they will reimburse you. then book the flight. while first class passengers from your current flight are just starting to be served and rebooked by the gate agent or at the help desk halfway across the airport you have your seat.

the last day on twitter has been awkward.

Anyone know what the hell happened with her on Twitter today? She made a snippy tweet to @kstatecare about them not including her in their "It's all about us" campaign then she seemingly deleted her account. Odd meltdown and decision to delete her Twitter considering some of the previous issues she's had on Twitter.

i get the big box from costco

one thing i can't figure out is why the grape flavored ones have a much harder texture than the other flavors (notably the orange and peach).  it's so weird.
anyone got any welch's fruit snack insidery info?

little known clams factoid:  i eat at least 6 bags of the fruit snacks per day (yes, i typed per day).  i think they have a lot of sugar, somewhat concerned about that, i'll investigate and take appropriate counter measures if needed.

Yes, I love those things 'clams.

I also love berry tie-dye fruit by the foot.

I try not to buy either tho because I have no self control when stuff like that is in the house and it only lasts like one day  :frown:

Sometimes if I'm drinking alcoholic drinks I'll go in the kitchen and eat an entire bag in one mouthful, then do that again. Mrs. CF3 will come down in the morning and be like "have a few drinks before bed?" and I'm like "no...." then she's like "so who left 4 dora the explorer fruit snack wrappers in the sink?"  :dubious:

Let's get back to Welch's tho.

'clams you need to ditch that mixed fruit nonsense and grab some berries and cherries. It's like they handpicked out all the shitty flavors and just left you the best to nom on

in my world, fruit snacks are fruit
i've not tried any of the other stuff you've linked but the shark ones have my attention
i'm not sure about the berry/cherry, i've never seen them.  i like the costco mixed fruit because there's 80 packs in the box.  so you're wondering, if clams is eating 6 packs a day, how many days would his box last?  mocat?  13.3 days is the answer.

at halloween, i bought a box of boo berry fruit roll-ups, felt elite buying them especially when the kids around me in line saw them and were massively jealous.

you're probably wondering what my fruit snack game has been up to lately.
good news, i haven't been to costco to pick up the 80 count box lately and obvs have been out for a while.  stopped at wal-mart across from gus's fried chicken today to pick up a couple of things and remembered this thread.  i could not remember the recommendos from the thread but i did remember the thread.  anywho!  i've been meaning to check out different stores' fruit snack varieties and wal-mart had these beasts-

i'm only on my 5th pack and am not sure what some of the flavors are.  pineapple is good.  so is grapefruit.  kiwi is kind of weird.  i think there's banana, pomegranate, and maybe strawberry.  the mystery ensues as i try to map these new fruit flavors to their shapes.  it's so hard though.

'clams, fyi I want to rescind the scooby doo fruit snacks recommendo from earlier in this thread. I bought a 24packer a few weeks ago and they changed the formula of the fruit snack and it's not as good anymore and the scooby doo shape isn't special anymore

mine are fresh.  i did buy a box a couple winter's ago that weren't fresh though.  it happens, what are you going to do?

ok, i got the fruits/flavors/shapes all mapped out
strawberry- traditional strawberry shape, red color
banana- same mold used as strawberry, yellow color
pomegranate- same mold as peach from traditional flavor box, light purple color
kiwi- heart shaped mold used, light green in color
grapefruit- same old used as orange from traditional flavor box, pinkish orange color
pineapple- new mold used- shaped like a small pineapple, same red as strawberry

flavor scale on 1-5, 5 being the best
pineapple: 5
grapefruit: 4
pineapple: 2
strawberry: 2 (i'm just sick of them, they overdo the strawberry by putting too many per pack)
pomegranate: 3? thoughts?
kiwi: 2.8
