Causation/correlation. There's nothing about legalizing marijuana that would reduce usage amongst any demographic.

I disagree.  By legalizing marijuana, the Colorado government has nearly killed the black market for the drug.  By nearly eliminating the black market in Colorado, they can more effectively control who buys it.  A pot dealer may not care if someone is 15 or 50, but the people in the pot shops certainly do.

How does that kill the black market? I understand that would be the case for a suburbanite in Castle Rock, for a trust fund frat boy with a BMW at CU, and for someone living in gentrified LoDo; what about everyone else? You don't think there are dealers in Fountain/Ft. Carson selling weed for $3 less than they can get at the weed shop 15 minutes away? Again this issue is one of privilege and access, legal weed doesn't eliminate the dealer for everyone, just most that the decision makers care about and can relate to.

I can't government surveillance could be any more intrusive than it already is. Also is that a right being taken away?

The conference title runs weren't exactly Juco heavy. Yeah you had a couple big time transfers (Harper, Brown, Terry) but outside of Brown the real stars were all high school recruits. Not saying we couldn't be doing a better job there, but more schools recruiting Juco's is a pretty lame reason/excuse for the decline in talent.
well when the OP was talking about the 1997 fiesta team you can understand why i said that the jucos have changed. they have
But the changes are not why we no longer have elite talent
sure they are, the bigger schools have lowered their admission criteria which has hurt us in recruiting battles

I don't think this is true. I think that schools could still take prop 48 kids in 1997.

Trump's supporters aren't necessarily all racist misogynist homophobes, but they definitely supported one.

I supposed I can understand that feeling. I think the fears are a bit over-blown though. Everyone probably just needs to relax a bit...  If anyone really needs to be blamed here it's Joe Biden.
What specific fears are overblown?

You can't have a overblown fear; fear is in the eye of the beholder. Some people have a warped sense of what the fallout of what the next four years will be but its understandable because they're scared. Trump's rhetoric did this as he needs to fix it. I didn't vote for Hillary but people didn't fear that their rights would be infringed upon during a Hillary Clinton presidency.

Really?  Maybe fear is a strong word, there was certainly some concern there.

Enlighten me as to what rights could be perceived as under siege because of the words of Hillary Clinton. To save time and bullshit don't even say a word about the second amendment because she has never threatened to repeal that, let's not carry the water for the NRA.

Trump/Pence vs. Warren/Booker is going to be a f***ing riot in four years.

Booker has some stuff on his record that a person of color cannot overcome in a national election. I love Warren but she'll do nothing to bring back the people that the Democratic party has lost. I don't know where they can turn but if you're looking for a woman, root hard for Jennifer Grandholm.

Oooh also Tulsi Gabbard, I'm pretty sure even stunted and wacky would vote for her.

Emo, it's sometimes difficult for black people to take clear photos if the lighting is bad.

Ya.  Remember that racist facial recognition software?

Hey MIR, stupid anecdotal story.  One time I was in Iowa, Boone maybe? for work.  Customer took us to a strip club.  All the white farmers in overalls and John Deere hats were really giving the love to this foxy black stripper.  She made way more money than anyone else.  So, like, I don't think your neighbors are racist, probably just underexposed (no photography pun).

I can safely say that I live near some racist people and some non racist people. I live in the country, I don't have neighbors.

On the whole, the positives greatly outweigh the negative of a handful of more junkies

This is a shame to read and it comes from a position of extreme privilege.

That may be true, but it's a shame to read you fear mongering so heavily.

It's not fear mongering. I once had a job as what essentially amounted to what's known as a social worker. The organization I worked for had several apartments around Wichita, in those apartments lived young adults aged 16-23, they were either juvenile offenders or kids getting ready to age out of foster care. They were learning to live independently so that perhaps when they are released from state custody they can lead productive lives free of government assistance. 72% of those people were in some level of substance abuse treatment. Now this part is anecdotal, but it doesn't make it any less true; a great majority of them have stories stating that they started with alcohol and marijuana then moved on to other crap. I care more about people like this than I do people who want legalized weed to make it easier to toke up with their old college buddies while watching the game. You can think of it as fear mongering if you want but this is what informs me.

While not a significant dip and not a terribly large sample size:

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/colorado-s-teen-marijuana-usage-dips-after-legalization/

I think the additional tax revenues and benefits of having more control over the market place outweigh the risks of it being more available to the general public.

FYI - We probably need a weed thread bumped at this point

Causation/correlation. There's nothing about legalizing marijuana that would reduce usage amongst any demographic.

I'm sad.
I'm sad that there are so many racist, misogynist, homophobes that Trump could get this many votes. I thought we were moving past that.
I'm sad that suburban white women would use the privileged afforded to them by the suffering of many women before them to vote for someone who hates them.
I'm sad that the third party voters thought it was more important to make a statement than to protect their fellow Americans from policies that could take away their rights and dignity as human beings.
I'm sad that my lesbian friend is afraid she won't have the chance to marry her girlfriend. I'm sad that my transgender friend is fearful that future legislation will not protect them.
I'm sad that there is the possibility that American women in the future will have to consider unsafe illegal abortions.

I'm sad that many of those assholes are my own family members.
I'm really sad that my dad would have been the only family member I could have commiserated with and I can't call him.

That's tough to read, I'm sorry. I don't think Roe vs Wade and gay marriage are in any danger though, hopefully there's some solace in that.

Sooo... everyone who voted for Trump is a racist homophobe?  Just making sure I understand this correctly.

I certainly didn't say that but I think you're being very disingenuous if you don't see why people would think that. It's over, you won, it's okay to point out the type of campaign that allowed this to happen.

Controlling all of Congress, he can't do any worse than the last 8 years.  He's out in 4 if he can't.

Worst case includes a Ted Cruz supreme court nomination, or something like that.  Cruz didn't swallow his principles for nothing.

KSUW has a better chance at being confirmed to the SCOTUS than Cruz.

Yesterday, I would totally have agreed.  However, enough ppl voted for trump last night that Donald Trump is actually going to be the next president.  I mention this not to say that he is a R and will get his wants past an R congress, but because he is Donald rough ridin' Trump and won the presidency when I thought that there is no way the American electorate would be stupid enough to do such a thing.

This is a new world.  I think we should all be a little more open minded to the possibility of stupid things happening.

That has nothing to do with a supreme court nomination though. Besides did you all forget about the Republican convention? Trump nor any other Republican has no time for Ted Cruz.

I'm not arguing against the gateway theory. I just don't think you're going to see a dramatic rise in the number of those people you are talking about if weed is legal.

I didn't say anything about a dramatic rise, never did. I don't think open carry would result in a dramatic rise in people getting shot but I don't think it's a great idea.

Legalization is needed for the justice reform alone, imo.

There is absolutely no reason to tie these two things together. It is illegal for me to drive 45 mph in a 30, that won't get me thrown in jail.

The privileged dopers can toke up in more places now. This will likely result in more teens being exposed to illicit drugs but this is the silver linings thread so warm up the apple bongs, crackers.

this is not a shot at you personally, just a general statement. maybe parents should actually parent, you know, have tough conversations their kids about moderation and personal responsibility. the substances aren't the issue, self control is.

Have you had any exposure to teens or young adults with substance abuse issues? My parents were great about talking to me about alcohol, tobacco, and drugs; I saw both of my grandfathers die early from alcoholism, didn't stop me from binge drinking in high school. Luckily, from the grace of God I didn't become an addict, my genetic makeup sure as hell didn't save me.

I've dealt with my own personal substance abuse issues since I was 13. We can offer anecdotal evidence at each other until we are blue in the face. It won't mean anything. There is a culture of fear that surrounds illicit substances. The substances aren't the issue, it's the lack of education about their real dangers and an inability of our society to produce emotionally stable and intelligent human beings.

if it isn't clear: I'm 100% against high school kids drinking alcohol, using tobacco, or any drug.

Where are these societies worldwide that handle illicit substances well? Having a younger drinking age, societal indoctrination of alcohol, and liberal drug laws hasn't done much to quell addiction issues in Europe. This stuff is biological and I don't think it is a good idea to normalize mind altering substance use.

Feel free to clarify if I have misunderstood.  I'd like to understand what people are so afraid of, and if their fears are real or perceived.
As a white male, I'm not scared, but I think many people are shocked that so much of the population is ok with a bigoted, misogynistic bully as President.

Yeah

I think the crazy racisty people will chill a bit since the threat to the status quo won't be as eminent.

I took the day off to either hide from psycho angry trumpets or to play golf, if I can ever get off off this board I'm hitting the Callaways today.
