TV buying help thread
« on: June 07, 2015, 02:24:06 PM »
my 42" plasma has lasted me for like 5 years and it's starting to go bad. I haven't been in the TV buying game in some time and not sure what I should get. is 4k really worth it? is 65" too small these days to watch games and junk on? do I really need to spend $2500 on a TV?

should I buy both and just put the one I don't like as much in the bathroom or spare bedroom?  help me out guys

They're all the same, buy whatever looks good to you in the store, and buy one bigger than you think you need.

4k is nice but what content are you going to get? Go with 1080 and save the money.

4k isn't really worth it at this point. Until OLED comes down in price or High Dynamic Range becomes viable, you're still going to get the best picture quality with the deeper blacks and better contrast of a "standard" HD plasma. I would see if you can still find a Samsung pn64f8500. The last great plasma.

I got one not terribly long ago and like it.  Its the burn in that scared people away from the plasmas that isn't really a thing anymore.

I tend to turn my xbox on and just let it sit at the homescreen all day without using it, I feel like burn in could be a problem in that scenario.

I have a plasma and my only complaint is the glare.

plasmas were supposedly always heavier and put off a lot of heat/used a lot more electricity. I don't know if either of those things are still things though (if they ever were).

They aren't because they've stopped making them.

I have two 55" LEDs. One sony and one samsung. they are both fine and I can't tell the difference between them. I don't know much about their "specs" though.

Yes, weight and power were disadvantages. The burn-in thing was a myth (at least not after the first models). Plasmas are also easier to break and may not be the best suited for super bright rooms. Oh, and they're not being manufactured anymore. But high-end plasmas are still the best picture quality available at the consumer price point. If you can find them.

as mentioned, it will be YEARS before any meaningful content is 4k.  So forget it.

I have a Samsung 55" 4k that is the best damn looking TV i've ever seen. Granted, I bought it on the spot when I noticed how beautiful it was, but that's beyond the point. DirecTV broadcasts some 4k content and I have other 4k content so I can promise you it's freaking amazing looking.

TBT, you've seen my layout...a 65 won't fit on the mantle the way my 55 will or else I would have bought that instead.
