Wow.  I got chills watching that.  They said it in the video but that is a major engineering accomplishment.  I mean thinking of the physics of that entire sequence and the planning involved is just incredible.

See, here’s the deal with this kind of headline and this response.

https://twitter.com/rtjcooper/status/975778114289647616

First of all, how many miles have they driven without a fatality, and how does that compare to the general public.  Second, the same physics still apply to autonomous cars.  I highly doubt this thing just swerved into her, and she very well could have not been paying attention.  An autonomous car still abides by the same physics so if it doesn’t have room to stop then this can happen.  Third, as the software gets better it will prevent crashes and fatalities.  Tesla had that fatality last year or the year before where it ran under a semi crossing the road.  Even with that death it was statistically safer per fatality/miles driven.

That kind of comment is from an ignorant person who can’t see beyond their own nose.  I’m sorry but that kind of reasoning without knowing what they are talking about just drives me nuts.

Yeah, totally agree on that. Most people are texting on their phone eating a hamburger and putting on makeup, at least the driverless car is always attentive. And yes, statistically the driverless cars do perform better per mile, that headline though always has to be stirred up so people get talking about it.
