And yes, that smell was terrible. What do they secrete that does that?

they have glands in the base of the tail that produce a "musk".  in some species it is pretty liquid and they can sort of spray it, but in most it is pretty thick and they can just sort of ooze it out and smear it around.  i imagine it deters some predators.

Hahahah, great description. Well it made me really want to wash my hands a lot and I can still phantom smell it if I think about it.

Sys! My yard is basically a garter snake preserve. I see one about once a month either slithering through the grass or while digging in a flower bed.

Found this guy chilling under the lawnmower in my shed so I moved him out to the flower bed to chill in the sun.

looks like maybe a ribbon snake (which is a type of garter snake).  you are very fortunate to live somewhere still wild enough to have snakes and chipmunks.
