I've been watching the hell out of The Olympic Channel lately and my new favorite thing is this pre curling match warm up exercise where they kneel glide down the ice one right after the other. This video here gives you the idea, but is not a very good example of this poetry in motion.

So for anyone not following the news, the vast majority of Russian athletes will be permitted to compete - at least 200 - but only as "Olympic Athletes From Russia."  Which basically means we'll get to hear the John Williams Olympic Anthem if they win, and some seriously detailed rules about no Russian flags and clothes and such.

Here are the rules from the "Olympic Athlete from Russian Implementation Group" (this is not the Onion):

Quote
1. Athletes' uniforms (Ceremonies, competition, training and casual), accessories and equipment can only have two types of wordmarks: "OAR" and/or "Olympic Athlete from Russia".

2. Officials' uniforms (Ceremonies, competition, training and casual) and accessories can only have one type of wordmark: "OAR."

3. Print size for words "Olympic Athlete from" should be equivalent to the word "Russia" and above the word "Russia." The size of these words should be proportional to the area in which they are placed and will require individual approvals from the IOC.

4. Wordmark fonts should be in English and as generic as possible.

5. Only single or dual color elements are permitted on uniforms.

6. Separate items of clothing cannot create a tricolor.

7. The colors used in uniforms, accessories and equipment may not be in exactly the same range as those used in the Russian Federation flag. It is suggested that these are darker in color.

8. Country coat of arms, NOC emblem and national emblem must be replaced with the distinct OAR logo.

9. The proposed OAR logo consists of the words "Olympic Athlete from Russia" written in red and creating a circle.

10. The OAR logo must not include a third color.

11. No national identifications design elements should be featured on the uniforms.

12. These guidelines are applicable to all athletes and team officials/coaches uniforms (ceremonies, competition, training and casual), accessories and equipment.

13. All revised uniform, accessories and equipment designs and production samples need approval from the IOC.

And here is the final logo...

 Oh Russia....

Off topic to the olympics but on topic to this post, the whole going to these many pixels is laughable unless you are looking at it from like 2 ft away or you are blowing it up to like 1000 inches. Your eye can't tell the rough ridin' difference. HDR and color reproduction are the real improvements in TVs in the future.

The snow boarding thing is pretty ridiculous. I also like the downhill slalom. Watching the group speed skating is always interesting to see what nobody is gonna eff over a medal contender. Most of the Winter Olympics is kinda bleh though. Figure skating is impressive but ice dancing can GTFOOMF.

The IOC needs to put an end to country-jumping. I don’t think South Korea has a single figure skater that was born or raised in SK. One of them is a white American who got his “dual citizenship” in 2015.

Title: Re: PyeongChang 2018 XXIII Olympic Winter Games
Post by: K-S-U-Wildcats! on February 12, 2018, 09:24:17 AM
I like the pageantry of representing one’s country at the Olympics. That’s the big draw of the Olympics for a lot of viewers. Athletes and countries are making a mockery of that. And if they don’t clamp down on it, and it continues to get worse, viewership is going to suffer.
Title: Re: PyeongChang 2018 XXIII Olympic Winter Games
Post by: cfbandyman on February 12, 2018, 09:47:52 AM
Lol really? That's not what drives down viewership but your hyper-nationalistic view of how the "games" should work is pretty lol'ry. I also like how you altered your comment about it. From, "I like the pageantry and it's makes mockery of it" to "It'll hurt viewership" It does neither.

Post by: K-S-U-Wildcats! on February 12, 2018, 10:03:07 AM
If you don’t think the biggest draw for Olympic viewership is patriotism, you are deluding yourselves. And this isn’t just my concern - the former head of the IOC agrees.

Quote
The International Olympic Committee has long wrestled with the issue of athletes changing nationalities.

The practice dates to the 1920s and '30s when England and the U.S. stocked their ice hockey teams with Canadian players. Passport swapping grew steadily more popular over the years.

Most recently, oil-rich emirates such as Qatar and Bahrain – eager to boost their national prestige – have recruited world-class runners from Africa.

"From a moral standpoint, we should avoid this transfer market in athletes," former IOC president Jacques Rogge said in the early 2000s.

It’s no surprise that NBC selects its prime time coverage based primarily (not exclusively, but primarily) upon events where Americans are competitive. They are showing what American viewers want to see. TV broadcasts in other countries do the same. Patriotism drives interest in the games. The more you dilute that, the more you will dilute viewership.

I'd possibly be more into the olympics if it was more about the individuals than countries.

Comcast is doing all they can to get me to be interested in these things.  The button you hit on the remote to see sports scores and what games are on now automatically starts with olympics, and every menu screen has extra olympic options to accidentally click on.  Hasn't worked yet!

And I don't care at all about country jumping.  Athletes should be allowed to represent whatever country they want.  If they don't think fondly enough of their birthplace to carry that flag, why should they?

By that logic, why even represent a country at all? (Answer: because almost nobody would give a crap about the Olympics without the nationalism.)

Man ice dancing is so terrible.

Glad we get a couple hours of it each night

There is apparently one move and only one move in ice dancing, and it is called a “twizzle.” These are the people who couldn’t cut it as figure skaters. It is so bad that when a couple fell last night, the commentator basically said “well, they’re done. There’s so little that sets these competitors apart that if you fall that’s devastating.” There’s not that much to set them apart because “twizzling” is not exactly a triple axel.

Every competitor has also evidently been instructed to fall to the ice, flail, and weep (the other maneuver, called a “fleep”) at the end of their routine. Something on the order of “you just discovered cold fusion while simultaneously learning that your mom died.”

I respect that chick for gaming the system and making a mockery of the Olympics. The IOC deserves to be mocked.

our women's two person bobsled team may have the two best in the whole shooting match deal or whatever. enjoyed watching them fly down the ice slide at incredibly scary speeds that would make me pee my pants.

So my friend doesn't know her but she's the talk of their office. Apparently her friends don't understand why the media is slamming her and he doesn't think she has a sense of humor about it.
