Is oscar ruining Claws?
« on: January 22, 2016, 10:23:55 AM »
I am concerned by Claws downward development spiral.  I have never seen oscar's ability to coach big players.

No. He's got talent, but not elite talent. Most of these guys that aren't certain future pros are going to have a lull in their first season at some point. Not worried about it really.

I could be way off base in my comparos, but he reminds me a lot of a taller Jamar for some reason.

Not bad, but I think Claws will be a way better shooter. Jamar was way more athletic.

I think that's a solid comparo.

Jamar destroys Claws on the adorable scale.

I think so, but it's a really good comparison.

DNR thread, but the answer to OP is yes.  Claws needs development and oscar is not his guy for that.

Last year he was playing maybe 2 quarters a night while destroying 2A competition. I'm not at all surprised that he's wearing down a bit, he has never been conditioned to play like this. That's the biggest problem with coming from a small KS school, but with his talent he'll be fine.

My concern is that oscar's offense is not putting him in positions to succeed. Got to shoot to get out of a slump, but he doesn't seem to be getting the ball in a position to shoot very often at all.

How many wide open looks did he have from the high post against Baylor's zone? He took 12 shots, most on the team in that game.

No, you're right. Went back and looked at the numbers, and he's shooting plenty. I must just mentally block out his misses or something, he really hasn't seemed that involved at all to me, but he is in fact getting plenty of shots up.

He's Shawn Rhoads with a 3-point shot.

3PT shooting was the one thing Shawn Rhoads did best. Wade appears to be better at almost every other basketball related skill so far.

He needs to sack up a little bit, especially on Defense and the boards.  The generous interpretation is that the coaches told him to be careful about picking up fouls and he has taken it to too much to heart.

even tho he is 0fer the conference season outside of the TT game I still want oscar to run a couple of sets that get him a 3 every game.  The only chance we have of escaping low/medium status in the next 3 years is if Claws can space the floor, imo

Partial year 1 for Wade, but it's pretty much Rhodes with (at least belief in) a 3-point shot.

Damn I'm good!

Wade is a much better rebounder and gets to the FT line much more. Rhoads was a better shower. I think Wade had more upside.
