Look, i know you guys have been waiting for it. Well here it is. The season unofficially starts tonight...Bud Shootout at Daytona. Will Jr. win from the pole?? Will Harvick make it 3 straight? Goin to be crazy. So when the cats are in commercial, flip over to Fox for some left turns.
go cats.

I always skip the Nascar crap in Gran Turismo 5.
-
meh, don't blame you.
They've started their engines!!! :excited:

Did you hold your three up? rough ridin' hayseed

Those guys in the pits are marvels of efficiency... :driving:

Why when they talk about nascar do they always say the car numbers? Why not say the dude driving the car?

I'm with 77 on this one.
-
I mean, I know that all nascar drivers are essentially the same person and named either Bobby or Jeff, but it still confuses me...
-
Why when they talk about nascar do they always say the car numbers? Why not say the dude driving the car?
easier, quicker. Plus when drivers switch numbers over the off season, less chance for rough ridin' up.

because people don't have the mental capacity to remember names?

If thought this was an interesting question so I did a little googling. About 8 hits down I came across a site that makes castefootball look like the rainbow coalition. That aside, I was always under the belief that it was because they try to treat the cars as a team, rather than just a driver. Then again, I don't watch much nascar. :dunno:
-
Wasn't aware we had a thread for this...
Kyle's just disgusting at Bristol right now. Last year, no one had ever done the trucks, Nationwide, and Sprint in one weekend, and he did it. Well, he did it again this weekend, minus the trucks.
Love how Dale is getting his groove back. Of course, as you know, I'm a Hendrick guy.
Carl Edwards can suck a dick.
-
:D I figured you'd be around sometime.
Kyle Busch just wins races...curious to see how long he'll race 2 -3 times a weekend. He's still young with a bangin hot wife.
Sounds like Dale and Steve Letart(?) make a good combo...pretty cool to see him in the top 10 in points again.
Speaking of points...i'm still trying to figure out the point system. I think Gordon is like 19th...but i'm not sure how long it'll take for him to get up in the top 10. Seems like this system kills you on bad finishes.
-

Yeah, it's simpler to follow though...I think.
Points based on place makes sense to me. I haven't dug into how they give bonuses for laps lead, etc.
It seems like this system really, really puts a strong emphasis on keeping your car on the track. Wreck your call all of the time, and you have no shot at the chase.
-
Shocked at Harvick's twofer. Deanna must be cracking the whip.
Love that the Gibbs teams are struggling. Love it.

Yeah, great race. Kinda wished Jr. would have pulled it off, just so his winless streak would get out of the news. I'm always glad to see Busch fail. Looking like Hendricks' crew chief swap has been a pretty good move.

Yeah, Letarte and Gordon just didn't seem like they had a good rapport.
In all seriousness, Carl needs to drop from first. I hate that guy.
-
Carl's 1st? wow i need to pay closer attention. Not a fan of his phony act.
-
KEVIN HARVICK TWO IN A ROWWWWWWWWWWWWW! :bball:

Oh yeah. He's been on fire.
Now that basketball is over, I'll start spending a lot more time on NASCAR.

Just realized it's a Saturday night race this weekend at Texas. Love night races, even at a 1.5 miler like Texas.

I automatically think that the race didn't really count if Kennseth wins it. I don't know why.

Will give credit where credit is due, some of those guys pulled/are getting some seriously fine butt. Especially as nerdy as those guys look.

I've been looking at the replays, and it looks like Gordon tapped Boywer, which knocked him off just enough for Jimmie to get in there since he and Dale were clean on the line.
I was about ready to throw a big "eff" out there when I saw Jimmie start crossing the line on the final turn. I couldn't believe they pulled that off.
I'm just glad a Ford didn't win.
-
Goddamn, Boyer is a good guy. I would have beaten a member of my crew with my helmet if I lost like that.
-
I feel bad for Martin. Fell back to 8th. Wish he would have stuck to Gordon instead of trying to block JJ & Jr.
-

I don't think anyone can ever not feel bad when Martin gets screwed.

Matt Kenseth :shakesfist:

Five laps to go and Jimmie blows out his engine.
I don't blame Knaus for saying 'eff" on TV.
Go Dale.
:goodbyecruelworld:
-
OMG...Dale ran out of gas on the last turn. Holy crap. He's going to want to kill himself.
And Harvick ends up winning. Yay. At least his wife won't beat him Ike Turner style tonight.
-
Sucks. Jr should have won. Wonder how much fuel he would have needed for the last 500 ft or so.
-

I hate it when Harvick wins. He's such a pussy.
The only greater sin, in my world, is if you drive a Ford. Then the Toyota guys.
-
dang, great ending. Pissed jr. couldn't win. I'm tired of that story line.
Also, nice timing on the pit Gordon/Gustufson :shakesfist:
-
Glad man of taste and distinction Jr ran out of gas...worthless no-talent jackass doesn't deserve to win ever again
-
Nice to see Kyle Busch have a horrible night too.

Kansas Speedway this weekend
-
Yeah, I feel really dumb for not realizing the potential this weekend has. I totally should have went to KC last night so I could watch the Twins/Royals series and then the race on Sunday. I never really know where the next race will be until like Friday. Really need to start paying better attention.
-

Are you going? I didn't get tickets (we're visiting with relatives on Sunday that are passing through town).

not going. Had tickets offered to me...but i had some other things scheduled. I will enjoy sitting in Air conditioning watching the race instead of sweating my ass off tho.

Had free tickets, chose not to go. Have declined every time someone has offered. Went my 1st and only time to Kansas in 2005 and the racing sucked so much ass I haven't been back since.

i was not. Had prior commitments. Hot and slick conditions led to more spaced out racing = less wrecks.

Above-ground pools.

Gordon saving that car and finishing 6th tonight was the single best accomplishment in NASCAR this season. I watched the closing laps on my EVO's NASCAR app while at an independent league baseball game. Is there a white trash emoticon?

fairly certain watching it on your EVO app takes half the white trashyness away. But yeah, his save was ridiculous. Then to avoid the 3 wrecks and push Kyle to the front. Crazy.
-
actually watched the first 80 so laps of the race last night, haven't watched in a very long time prior to that. The two car drafting crap was pretty entertaining especially seeing non teammates trying to hook up with each other for mutual survival. Is Daytona one of the more exciting tracks for the sprint cup races?
-

Daytona, Talladega, Bristol, Richmond are all up there for me.
-
Not a fan of the 2x2 crap :dubious:
-
I don't really care for the 2 car crap either. Guess it's kinda cool when you some odd teams formed out of deperation. Also rough ridin' hate the commercials shown at the same time as racing. It's one thing to go to a commercial break but it's really annoying when I have to watch and listen to some stupid coke zero commercial that's taking up half the screen.

I only tune into about a handful of races a year, Daytona, Bristol, Dega, Charlotte, Indy. Any race that turns into fuel mileage is always :flush:. On to Pocono next week for the most boring race of the year, except the other time when they race there

Stupid move by NASCAR moving the Nationwide race here instead of the smaller Indy track. The track just isnt meant for stock cars.

-

5 races left i believe. Chase standings will be determined by the number of wins during the first 26 races. 3 points for each win. Take top 10 drivers in points, plus 2 drivers(if there are any) between 11-20 with at least a win, to make 12 max.
-
So, Jr and Stewart could be seeded 11 and 12? (I don't think Tony has won one yet?) And then it's just straight wins? I'm not sure what the F is going on but I kinda like what I think is going to happen. Nice way to reward race winners.
-
Also- I had never seen the 13-20 stipulation before. I thought it was just the most races won of the guys who didn't finish in the top 10.
-
11-20, Sorry. :chug:

Right now, Jr and Stewart better hope that they stay inside the top 10. Otherwise, without a win, they'll be cutting it close.
The two wildcards will be 11th and 12th no matter what. They can't move up at the start.

Personally, I didn't think what Busch did to him a few weeks ago was THAT bad. But there is history between Kurt and Jimmie, and while Johnson isn't really a smack talker or inflammatory, I think when you get him mad, he doesn't forget it.
I don't think anyone should be running their mouth at the five-time consecutive champ, but hey, what do I know?

yeah, i didn't realize their history. At least 5 different times of rough ridin' with each other.

very interesting tweets from Bayne. Surprised he actually is going public with it.

Bayne really revealing on twitter
Tbayne21 I'm not happy about what this has become... It's too premeditated. We should be able to go with whoever is around is
Tbayne21 I would have rather pulled over and finished last than tell @JeffGordonWeb I would work with him and then be strong armed into bailing
Tbayne21 @TroyDarbyson I agree. That's why I'm so sick about all this. I won't race restrictor plate races next year before I'm put in that situation
Tbayne21 @trm201 at that time matt and David were supposed to be working together.. I had no idea what was coming. I'm sorry
I'll give Bayne a pass and put this at the feet of those sorry ass has beens at Wood Brothers, although I'm sure they gave the go ahead to Bayne to throw them under the bus.

So who are we cheering for here? Despite the fact that Stewart is essentially a Hendrick driver and Carl drives a Ford for rough ridin' Jack Roush, I have to go with Carl. I really hate Fat Tony.
-
I used to really hate Tony, now I kinda like him. Don't really have an opinion about Edwards. Gues it's cool that someone other than JJ is going to win though.
-
goddamnit, why do i agree with jtksu????
I wouldn't mind seeing Edwards win it. Other than driving for Roush, I'm ok with him. Probably will be pulling for Tony though. I don't get how he went from so mediocre most of the season, to this. Crazy.
-
I respect him for turning his season around but he's still a chode. It was 13 weeks ago when he was talking like he gave up on his team and the season and he was bullying female reporters. Also "he better watch out" quotes from two weeks ago were lame. Was he really trying to intimidate Edwards? The way Carl handled that was great, essentially laughed at the troll. The perfect ending to the season is Stewart is in the lead late & has locked up the most laps led bonus, Edwards is in second and hasn't lead a lap and Edwards is forced to dump a blocking Tony Stewart to win the race and the championship.
-
It is nice the chase will actually come down to the wire for once. While i've never really cared for Tony...i do enjoy his "screw the world" approach instead of the PC media fanboys some drivers have turned into.
-

Silver lining, Jack Roush with his stupid ass hat continues to be a loser. Nice engines, douche.
-
Bumpity! Bumpity! Bumpity! Let's go racing!
Getting a head start this year compared to last. But they've started Daytona testing this week and it's got me in the mood. The Bud Shootout kicks off the season on February 18.
Potential story lines to pay attention to this year..
1. Fuel Injected Engines making their full time debut this year. Will they be as durable? more power? who develops an advantage first? new ways to cheat??
2. Danica Patrick's part time ride. Did Tony know wtf he's doing?? Will she win a race? even a top 15?? when will she get naked??
3. New Ride/Sponsors. Kasey Kahne in a Hendrick car?? Clint Bowyer driving a Toyota?? A.J. Allmendinger in a Penske car? Kurt Busch driving for PHOENIX RACING??? No more Red Bull Cars??
4. Plate Racing. Will NASCAR eliminate the two car draft and bring back pack racing at plate tracks by limiting driver communication and tweaking the car(radiator, water temp, ect.)??
5. Can Jimmie get back on track. Will Tony repeat? Will Carl, Kyle, or Kevin finally win their first??
-
Danica calling herself the The Chamber.... :flush:
-
Yes bigwillie20, i am too excited about this coming season. Hopefully Danica just killed the nickname.
-
Kasey Kahne picking on a poor woman nursing  not a good way to start your life at Hendrick. Learn some decorum from your teammates, boy.
Can't wait to cheer for Danica, anything to piss the Talledega necks off. She will be my favorite when 24 hangs up the driving boots and hopefully she'll win enough to move right into JGs seat when its time. She was doing much better than expected in Nationwide considering she had 0 stock car experience. If she's as good as Juan Pablo she'll be insanely popular and will grow the sport even more than Gordon and 3 did in the 90's.
-
you were bothered by Kahne's tweets? i thought they were overblown. He obviously should keep some comments to himself, but i didnt think it was that bad.
I will be surprised if Danica wins 1 race. OK, i can see her winning a fluke fuel mileage race or something(I mean Joey Lagano won a race for christ's sake) But i don't see her winning 2. It would be good for the sport if she does though and she should have the best equipment.
-
She will not win any races...of course she might come closer than that waste of a ride Dale jr....would love to see her take that worthless rough rider's ride since he will never do anything with it other than riding off of daddy's name for the rest of his life
-

Him being grossed out didn't bother me. I think its stupid and just another sign as to how unrefined most of this country is, but to each his own. My issue was the language he used with the breast feeder, I think he used the word disgusting, and the tone of exchange he had with one of the ladies who called him out. I wish I could remember her handle, she was quite funny and clownsuited Kahne. I was going to add her as a follow but her timeline, while good, is way to busy.

I will be surprised if Danica wins 1 race. OK, i can see her winning a fluke fuel mileage race or something(I mean Joey Lagano won a race for christ's sake) But i don't see her winning 2. It would be good for the sport if she does though and she should have the best equipment.
I was going to add her as a follow but her timeline, while good, is way to busy.
ahh, and to be honest, i never read the exact exchange...just a synopsis. People should be smarter with twitter.

Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle front row. Woof.

Hope the racing in the shootout is indicative of what we'll see on Sunday. Do any of you guys make it a practice to watch the twin 125's?

Definitely looks like Pack racing is back. Only two car drafting will be at the end.
yes. will definitely be streaming this year.

They just showed a picture of Biffle with a fishing pole under a tent. I'll switch back periodically to see if the race has started, but I'm done waiting.

I need an explanation as to why night racing didn't happen, pretty lame that the race was moved when there's lights. It stopped raining in Daytona at like 6:15. Even if they started at 8PM eastern and finished by midnight the ratings would have been like 5 times higher.

People who watch the 500 give nary a damn about any of that, the ratings still would be better than a 11AM Monday start. :sdeek:

Maybe Danica wanted to watch the Oscars, 'CAUSE SHE'S A WOMAN.

they said it takes at least 2 hours to dry the track during the day....even longer once the sun sets. I don't think they wanted to risk having the biggest race of the year end after midnight EST.
Looks like tomorrow may be a wash too. Just shitty timing all the way around.

I'm going Fantasy this year...i'll do horrible just because i'll go with Gordon at times i shouldn't.
Guessing Stewart or a Busch brother will pull it out tonight. Danica will wreck 1/3 of the way through. sorry MIR.

I'm 24 for life but if she's in contention at the end I will cheer for Danica until she gets the win. WW's prediction for driver 7 is most likely. Your prediction of a lame ass winner is almost a certainty.
-
curious how the weather will play out. It's been clear for the past hour and a half...which means they could have been racing here within the hour. It's suppose to stay mainly dry, but there is a chance of a stray thunderstorm. If it stays clear until 7ish...and then rains a bit...that will be very frustrating.
NASCAR made the right call though and took a chance on primetime racing. Hope it works out.

I think I like Monday night racing.

Pretty boring so far. Everyone is chilling after the 2 accidents in the first 10 laps.

Danica seems to be pretty good at wrecking cars, not so good at actually racing them. Unless the race is to see how many cars you can wreck.
-
So, I missed the wreck. Did Sadler just do it by being a shitty driver?
Goddammit.

good read. I don't really have anything against NASCAR, maybe I just don't have the time to get in to it. I also dislike hardcore NASCAR fans (throw pillows of their favorite drivers number, colors, etc). Maybe casual fandom would be better for me.

MRN radio. haven't seen a tv one yet.
Matt Weaver ?@MattWeaverSBN
Bowyer tells MRN that he "hated losing to that butthole."

like I have said numerous times, he's such a bitch. He won't even own the three times he's hit 24 in the last 6 races or so.

Rick Hendrick wearing Roger Penske's Shell cap, while Penske wearing Rick's slanted H cap. That's how good of friends these guys are.

Watched bits and pieces while switching back and forth between NCAA tourney games. Great finish to the race. Also liked Tony Stewart going after Logano after the race. Smoke had some rough words for Joey...said he was going to "bust his ass." Joey better look out. Smoke keeps his word.

LOL, I seriously doubt that Fat Tony has ever gotten in a fight in his life. I loved the two interviews he granted yesterday, but he is a hypocritical crybaby for having a tantrum about blocking on the last green flag. Who the hell hasn't or wouldn't have blocked there.
Yes WW the whole race was good. I watched the 2nd half of the race after the ISU/OSU game finished. Lots of passing, pit road speeding issue, tire and mechanical problems; there was constant action. Looking forward to Martinsville.

good to hear. Maybe the new car has potential.
And i think Tony's thing with Joey was more of a cumulative effect. What Joey did yesterday did not deserve Tony's rage. I think it was more of trying to knock Logano down a peg or two.

part of the advantage of NASCAR events is the freedom to pak in the stands. Also there are other things you can do while the race is going on. If you have the chance in the future you should go. The race itself can be pretty cool. It isn't boring watching cars go left.

Ya I think if we 1) hadn't got so hammered the night before, and 2) didn't have a bunch of crap to do on Sunday, then we would have gone. Especially if the weather was going to be warmer/sunnier.

This nascar trucks race at eldora should be pretty cool to watch. There is only a handful of drivers that are most likely to win it, but anything could happen. Bloomquist is going to be extremely tough to beat, and kyle larson is an open wheel dirt track phenom. These guys without dirt experience are going to wreck like crazy.

Yeah, Bloomquist is a douche, but he is really good at saving his tires for the long dirt races.

Hope so and also that he bumps Kurt Busch out of The Chase. The Busch brothers are pretty good drivers, but they leave a lot to be desired as far as human beings go (IMHO). Jeff, on the other hand, is a pretty good human being, as are all the drivers who work for Rick Hendrick...especially Dale Jr.

Kasey Kahne.
Also, anyone else wish they would add Bristol and Richmond as actual Chase races? Love the short track night races.. Get rid of Talladega aka.the nap until "the big one" and one of the mile and a half tracks.

Although short track Martinsville is already in the Chase, I'd rather see Bristol in rather than Phoenix or Homestead.

I have no idea why the change was made this isn't going to bring in more fans or anything. That being said I'm okay with it I guess. I would have been more excited if they added a road course to the chase and changed the finale from Homestead to Atlanta or Martinsville.

Agreed for the most part. The gradual elimination of drivers every few races throughout the Chase might be interesting (I emphasize "might"). That said, Homestead is no place to have the last race of the season. I could live with Martinsville, but would love Daytona--start and end the season there, with the July race retained.

Daytona would be horrawful because the chasers would literally ride in the back the entire race and then move up the last lap. I hate restrictor plate racing, they have to make it better.

http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/articles/2014/1/30/chase-for-the-nascar-sprint-cup-championship-format-changes.html
I have no idea why the change was made this isn't going to bring in more fans or anything. That being said I'm okay with it I guess. I would have been more excited if they added a road course to the chase and changed the finale from Homestead to Atlanta or Martinsville.
I'm pretty meh on it. I didn't care for the current chase, so i'll give this a shot. Seems like it has a better chance of keeping a Jimmie Johnson type run from happening.
At the end of the day, fans will watch because the racing is good. If they can improve the actual racing, that's all that matters.
Would like a Charlotte/Atlanta/Martinisville/Bristol finish... Homestead is bad.
-
I wonder if we will see teams try to get all their members in. Like will KyleB slow down to let Denny take first on the last lap of Kansas since Kyle won at Bristol a couple weeks back?

Did you miss what happened when Michael Waltrip Racing tried that at the end of last season? No one will try that again.

Need a new driver guys rusty was my dude since the beginning but I just can't stand brad. Help me out, ATM harvick is in the kings chair but that is obviously subject to change

I get what they are trying to do and I guess its ok. Guessing it has more to do with TV viewership than track attendance. I'm not a big fan of the change but I wasn't a big fan when they went to the chase format either and that turned out ok. I agree that if you are going to have a winner take all type race then it needs to be moved to a better track (Texas, Atlanta, Marti, Richmond).
I do like the new qualifying format though.

there is a badass rookie class coming in this year if you wanna jump on one of those. But i'd suggest Stewart.

I like it too, but with this format last season we would have had a chase without Earnhardt, Gordon, and Boywer; people would have freaked out.

I actually like it, but agree on the finale.
Agree w/ either of those as the last race, too. But I think Bristol would be perfect for it. Go night race, a more stadium style set up, would feel way more big time I think.

Bristol was better this past season but passing there has been an issue since the COT.

This goes without saying but there's no way the races, with driver decision making and crew chief strategy, would end the same way.

He'll get in without a win and he and Gustafson know it. I have been very frustrated with Gordon the past few years, he isn't an aggressive driver which I have no problem with. I do have an issue with the crew chief never ever taking a swing with pit strategy. Every stop is on schedule with four tires and a full tank, shuffle to the back, move into the top 5, rinse & repeat. A combination of Hendrick, Gordon, and Gustafson have turned him into a safe top 10 machine

JG admitted that restarts have been his weakness the last several years, and vowed to work on it...haven't really seen anything definite...but a couple times i noticed he's gained a few spots on restarts, instead of his normal lose 3 spots, then get them back in 50 laps.
Curious how Letarte and Junior seem to have hit their stride...only for Letarte to leave next year.

Missed the race so I need to go back a rewatch hightlights/ last 10 laps. As a Kyle Busch fan ... :driving: :Woohoo:
As a racing fan, I love it that Larson is doings well. Anyone watch the nationwide race yesterday or see highlights? Kid drove the heck out of the car to hold of Harvick and Busch.

will be cool to see if that becomes his signature celebration. I have seen him do it many times in midgets and sprint cars, but with the stagger, you can just do donuts without the steering wheel locked in, not as easy in a full body stock car.

you're right, it has been pretty bizarre.
and yes, I would be incredibly rough ridin' pissed if I was Gordon. I'm sure he has zero say in it, since the Axalta owner is paying for it, but damn that would suck.
MIR, thoughts?

Gig em! Gordon seemed fired up about the scheme in the post race interview. I'd be pissed if I were aTm because that didn't look like their regular maroon to me, looked almost a shade of purple. Since they left I've felt my aTm hate leave me, out of sight out of mind. meh.
I'm happy with the race, second is a very good result. I'm thrilled that Gustafson finally gambled on a strategy and it nearly worked.
First place :Woohoo:

Kurt "lolaw" Busch got a flat left rear and literally lost all the sheet metal & everything underneath it on that left side, it was pretty freaky how quickly it happened.

Hey guys...how good is Kyle Larson going to be? I mean between the Nationwide race on Friday and the Cup race on Saturday he was in the wall roughly 1,200 times but he came away with a pair of top 10s.
Answer: Pretty good.
Also, Chase Elliot

Nationwide has some pretty good races now. Nice to see those young drivers competing.

David Caraviello ?@dcaraviello 7m
Jordy Nelson, a Green Bay Packers WR and Kansas State product, to drive pace car at Kansas. He'll keep a sure grip on the wheel, I'm sure.

Question for you Nascar aficionados. What happened to Dodge teams? I know they didn't have the presence of Ford, Chevy, or even Toyota but they fielded some good cars. Kasey Kahne had a good Dodge while he was driving for Evernham and didn't Keselowski win the chase with a Dodge a few years ago?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Dodge left after the 2012 season. They were having trouble finding sponsors and didn't feel the company could sustain the investment necessary to compete at a high level. Dodge has said they may come back in the future.
-
I stopped watching four or five years ago. I always rooted for Dodge guys though, especially Kahne with the Budweiser Dodge. I hope they get back into it.

:frown: t's and p's for Kevin Ward Jr. I hope this was an accident or made up.
Yikes, definitely not made up. I just listened to a witness on the radio who gave a pretty good summary. His best guess was that it was an accident due to the guy coming to confront Stewart, he was in a dark firesuit, no helmet, darker than normal track, etc. A different report from deadspin says the guy gestured to Stewart and then Stewart gunned his engine.
-
Most people are guessing he didn't make it :frown:. They lit flares for the helicopter, but put them out before a helicopter got there.
Edit - now reporters are saying he was at least admitted to the hospital, so :dunno:
-
New report from Deadspin...
"Tyler Graves, a sprint-car racer and friend of Ward's, told Sporting News in a phone interview that he was sitting in the Turn 1 grandstands and saw everything that happened.
"Tony pinched him into the frontstretch wall, a racing thing," Graves said. "The right rear tire went down, he spun on the exit of (Turn) 2. They threw the caution and everything was toned down. Kevin got out of his car. … He was throwing his arms up all over the place at Tony for most of the corner.
"I know Tony could see him. I know how you can see out of these cars. When Tony got close to him, he hit the throttle. When you hit a throttle on a sprint car, the car sets sideways. It set sideways, the right rear tire hit Kevin, Kevin was sucked underneath and was stuck under it for a second or two and then it threw him about 50 yards."
Police dept. is supposed to be making a statement soon.

Can someone who follows this give us background on Tony Stewart? Seems I've heard he has a history of being a dick? That video looks like he did that crap on purpose????
-
I don't follow racecar driving but do guys usually get out of their car and walk around trying to get in front of the other racecars often? that seems like something that maybe isn't a good idea. obviously the car drivers should do everything possible not to run him over but what on earth was he thinking was going to happen?

Watched the video multiple times, and after growing up around racing/dirt track racing, there is no doubt in my mind Tony did not hit him on purpose..
First, he was a cocky young kid cause he had no reason to be pissed. Tony slid him and the kid didn't check up and drove himself in the wall. Also, when he gets out (completely rough ridin' idiotic), he almost gets hit by the car in front of TS and then jumps back down after, Tony probably barely saw him (black fire suit, helmet, dark track, car in front of him, etc.). He hit the gas when he saw him to get down the track, but in a staggered car on a slick/not tacky track, he kicks the back end out instead of moving the car down, and that's what clipped him.. Sad deal

Wouldn't a "pro" racer know this fact too? I'm sure didn't mean to hit him but I'm sure there was some "i'm going to blow some dust on this young punk" type of thinking going on.
-
Yes and no.. if he locks up the brakes, in a sprint car, he hits the kid without a doubt (possibly doesn't kill him, tho). Hit the gas, and he has a chance to not.
Point is, by coming down on the track, that kid put his life in the hands of TS to make a split second decision, and it didn't work out for him.

Damn, that's some pretty heavy stuff. He literally couldn't get enough time on the track and in an instant it's all gone. I know when I was done playing ball it wasn't the same but it's hard. Terrible for all parties involved.

I hate to be cynical in this, but someone ought to be. This seems like a calculated act of contrition. The great man poised to announce his retirement for accidentally slaying the unknown boy, only to be persuaded back into racing by a tide of forgiveness, absolving him of all his sins. That tide is coming, have no doubt.

I missed most of the race. What happened?
Gordo dominated the race, was clearly the best car. On a restart he was 2nd and had to restart outside, he got shuffled back to 5th, Junior had the chance to let him in and he didn't. Two different times in the last 25 laps Jeff and Junior had to quickly work up to the front and they did. Junior won, Jeff finished 2nd and the only reason Jeff finished 2nd is because Junior refused to let him in. Post race Jeff was obviously disappointed he couldn't clinch the final four but he didn't express any frustration with Junior or this stupid outside lane thing.
This outside lane issue has to be fixed, it's absurd. They have people literally stopping before the line during pit stops to get the inside row. People are willing to give up spots too get inside. I've never seen this happen and I've been watching the sport nearly my entire life.
Oh there were two red flags, never saw even one here.

Man JG24 is all class and having an amazing season. His championship will be the most popular since Earnhardt's 7th.
Oh there were two red flags, never saw even one here.
ahh gotcha. I hope Gordon pulls it out this year. I doubt he sees a year like this again.

:flush:

So the new winning is everything format for deciding the champion could very well be won by a win less driver. If Kennseth wins it all that would be
-
If Keselowski wins this championship he should go down as the greatest driver of all time. He honestly has to have at least a dozen drivers who want to spin his ass out.
Also good for Kevin Harvick
-
My thoughts....Gordon left too much room. He should have known 4 tires would be much quicker on the restart. Good for Jimmie for holding them off. That said, Keselowski is a dumbass.
I couldn't believe I missed Harvick's role in the fight the first time. He hates his ass too.
Whoever the Kahne crew member that was throwing punches is probably getting fined/suspended for a while.
-
Looked like when Harvick pushed Brad towards Gordon rough ridin' Jeffy fainted  Brad's the best new driver out there and it was Jeffy who cut down on him.

Absolutely but that was not the spot on the track to try to fit your car in. Gordon had to come down or he was going to flirt with scraping the wall. The problem with Keselowski is that he gets into a mode, Harvick called it bash mode, when he has no regard for anyone else on the track and the code that these guys have for how to drive so that you don't tear up cars. A stock car is essentially 4 wheels on a hunk of tin, in the world of auto racing its a crude machine, and with safety advancements its easy to feel bullet proof in those cars. The problem is that no one drives like that, no one but Brad anyway. He is racing by a whole different set of rules than everyone else including the Busch's. He can keep driving like an bad person if he wants to, its his prerogative, but he can't keep wrecking these guys cars and not expect the drivers and the crews that work on these cars to get pissed. He and his defenders bring up Earnhardt but Dale didn't drive like this, those good ol' boys would have beat his ass. Later in his career Earnhardt would use the chrome horn and if that didn't work he might spin you. Keselowski has no patience and uses his car as a battering ram, he would have had no problem passing Gordon the right way if he waited 7 seconds to reach turn 3.

Ricky Craven was too nice when he said that was not the place to pass (Kezeffup passing Gordon at Texas) . . . of course he went on to say that's the stuff you get in this Chase format, so in essence he backpeddled a bit. But, that pass has now cost Gordon a chance to win 5, because even though he finished 2nd today, the 29th at Texas finished him, because Harvick won today.

Jeff will wreck Brad at some point. Next week or next year, he'll pick his time. But it will happen.

He needs to be more aggressive. I'm hoping he turn old and crotchety, turning into a dick out there. Also i can't believe Newman made it in. Has 4 top 5's all year.

Congrats to Kevin Harvick as this season's champ. He drove a great race and his crew chief made great decisions.

Next year, five Chase races are on NBCSN (not as many people get it as ESPN). That includes two of the elimination races (Dover, Talladega).

No, I'm pretty sure this is a good thing, meaning the other 5 chase races will be on NBC, where as there was only previously 1 chase race on ABC

Just might start watching now because of this

Sarah Koenig just found her case for Season 2 IMO.
-
Busch offered up specific examples of her returning from missions, sometimes with bruises.
Once, he said, they were in El Paso, Texas, where Driscoll had left that night in camouflage and boots. She returned later to the hotel at which he was staying wearing a trench coat. Under it she was wearing an evening gown splattered with blood and other matter, Busch testified.
Neither Driscoll nor her attorney refuted the claims during the hearing.
:runaway: :runaway:
-
Driscoll, 37, lives in Ellicott City, Md. She heads two organizations, both of them based in Washington, D.C. One is the Armed Forces Foundation, a veterans advocacy group that partners with NASCAR. The other is Frontline Defense Systems, whose website says Driscoll "spent the majority of her career in the narcotics and intelligence world."
-
DOVER, Del. -- The NASCAR driver known as "The Outlaw" testified Tuesday he believes his ex-girlfriend is a trained assassin dispatched on covert missions around the world who once returned to him in a blood-splattered gown.
:sdeek:

I was curious how NASCAR would handle a domestic issue case as other sports have blown it. But now small potatoes.

What I don't get about Kurt Busch's "defense" is that if she is some kind of trained assassin (seems to me that she is just a lady who loves guns and isn't some kind of hand-to-hand badass) what kind of abusive wack job does he have to be that she needs an order of protection from him?

went to the chili bowl yesterday, and crossed paths with Tony Stewart after,s he sat out this year for health reasons, but took on the role of prepping the track. the god damn dude worked 12-14 hours every day this week working the track. anyway, I've always loved the chili bowl. It's a fun experience, and I'd suggest anyone who loves racing and party rockin to attend at some point in their life.
P.S. No female assassins were in attendance, that I saw.

I've always wondered about the fumes. It seems like going to the Chili Bowl is what it would be like living inside of a cigarette.

it's a little different, because I hate being in insanely smokey bars now (you can still smoke in bars in Tulsa) but don't mind being in there at all. for most people, the fumes are the worst part, and it's the only part that has ever got to me (they burn straight methanol, so it'll get to your eyes). but the only other time it can be annoying is on long runs after multiple races and the track goes dry slick, the dust can be irritating. But for the most part, they re-work the track throughout the day and it never gets too bad. I wouldn't really compare any of it to living inside a heater, tho.
you can also upgrade to a pit pass, or just do a pit pass, so you walk right out of the bleachers and into the pits to get away for a few if the fumes get to you. you can go meet/hang out with Kasey Kahne, Kyle Larson, Tony, Kenny Wallace, Ricky Stenhouse, etc. it's a pretty cool experience.

Gross, that link should have come with a disclaimer.
My new guy will either be Larson, Hamlin, or Edwards; Larson most likely. It would help if one of those three signed with Hendrick.
-
jumped on the denny bandwagon, i was always a rusty guy but after watching dennys last couple of talk show interviews he is hilarious
-
Larson is very very likeable. Kahne is my guy already, but if they're both with Hendricks at some point, that would be a lot of fun.
BTW, i'll be on pit road (not actual pit road during the race, but ya know) for the spring Kansas Speedway truck and NASCAR night races. Should be a good time. #fanningbrag

Pretty surprised they aren't retiring the 24 at least temporarily anyway, maybe they will after championship #5 this season.

It was an interesting 24 hours for Kurt Busch from Thursday to Friday night. He pushes Danica into the 500, although I'm sure she would have made it without the help. Friday he gets suspended for pushing his girlfriend at the monster mile

I'm guessing his punishment would have been different before the Ray Rice thing happened. I don't see how anyone wants to mess with him at this point.

Before Ray Rice he wouldn't ?ave been suspended at all. I'm sure he'll be back because he's talented. I mean he called a well respected person in the sport a rough ridin' man of taste and distinction on camera and race teams didn't even flinch.

Either Joey or Kurt Busch have to be the the most disliked drivers in Sprint Cup while Kenseth, before yesterday anyway, was the most "meh" person in the history of sports.

Jeff was superb in his first race as an analyst. I'm also glad to see Larry Mac did well in his transition to a new role.

Watching the brickyard because JG88 is running. It's a boring race as they tend to be and IMS is maybe 40% full.
NASCAR needs a shake up and some stars. The hyper equalization rules and constant tweaking are killing them.

They are always boring on TV until the later laps. I've been to two races in KC and they were a lot of fun

I can't believe how detached I have become from NASCAR this season since my guy is gone. I started watching Cale Yarbrough as a lil tyke with my mom, I've literally been watching the sport for 30 years. Now I haven't seen a single race to completion, I haven't even seen 100 total laps all season. It doesn't help that my new guy, Larson and my gal, are poop.

Have friends that knew him and said he was a pretty amazing dude. Sad deal.

NASCAR is still a thing? Since they have been relegated to broadcasting on some public access channel buried in my cable package I never even stumble on a race anymore.

Oh and NASCAR races need to be shortened to like 250 miles. Make the gas tanks smaller and the tires wear out faster so you can still have all the pit stops. 3 - 4 hours for a race is rough ridin' stupid.

ratings definitely suck now. But i like having races on NBCSN somewhat. They had two rough ridin' hours of post race yesterday. While that's overboard, it's nice compared to the 15 minutes you used to have back on ESPN, ABC, etc.

The Daytona commercials during the Super Bowl made me realize I know nothing of this sport anymore, so I decided to look some stuff up and Jesus.
- It's now THE MONSTER ENERGY DRINK OF CHAMPIONS NASCAR CUP SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP or something. Man, I miss Winston Cup.
- They're running segments, kind of like heat races with a long final segment now, instead of full races.
- Tony Stewart is retired with Bowyer driving his car, and his team is now running Fords, WTF. TS is doing a lot of dirt racing this year.
- Chase Elliott will have a Hooters car this year.
- I think Jr. is still sketti brained and really doesn't want to run plate races anymore.
- Go Kyle Larson

I have no idea if I'll like the segment racing or not. I realize NASCAR was losing so many fans they had to try something, but damn...the product is so different. I'm glad Gordon got out when he did.

I don't like the they all sound assy. Look at this one announced today.

yes! I played the crap outta a NASCAR game on my PS. If you continually restart the race over and over, eventually everyone would just drive around the track slow as crap.
Another one had a cheat that made your car turn indestructible. So i would just sit in the middle of the track and let cars hit and flip over me.

eff Richard Petty and eff Richard Childress, dumb rough ridin' rednecks won't rough ridin' win anything anyway.

I don't think there have been any good NASCAR games for a long time (haven't played video games in years, so could be wrong). Thought about getting into iRacing (for paved and dirt racing) on PC, but appears it would cost way too much money for a competitive set up.
-
It's stunning to me that for as long as they've been doing this that fox is still as shot as they are covering these races. It's amazing how they just neglect storylines throughout the races, it's absolutely the fault of Mike Joy and Darryl Waltrip but they need a producer or something to get their crap straight.
-
Not feeling Bubba Wallace, sorry.

I like Fox's graphics package.

Yeah, the graphics are fine although their sidebar makes no sense, we can't tell who is in what place beyond the top 10.

It's exactly why I posted that. It was the first time I heard him talk and I was unimpressed. I also will never ever ever roll with Richard Perry.
-
I've followed him for awhile and think he's a pretty likeable guy. Him and Blaney are bros. Have always liked Ryan and his family (Ryan's his dad and uncle are big dirt track guys, and his uncle was a stud basketball player at WVU) so would hear about him often.
I'm warming up to some of these younger dudes. Still team Larson, but Blaney and Bubba are good by me and I found myself pulling for them Sunday. Not so much Jones, Bowman, kid in the 24 car, etc., yet.
-
So glad I only watched for about 10 minutes.
Plate racing may simply be the stupidest thing in all of the top racing divisions.
The teams have to spend a ton to create a plate program. If they're so afraid of the cars on the big tracks, then put a smaller motor in for those races.

Can be hard to watch for extended periods, but it's Daytona and I'm ok with it a few races a year. I rarely watch the 1.5 mile tri-ovals but will sometimes watch the Kansas races. Bristol, Martinsville, Darlington, Dover, New Hamp, and Richmond are more my style.
I think the Bristol night race and Darlington are the best two races of the year.

Man, last years champion and possibly this years as well (TBD obvi), can't even get enough sponsorship $$ to continue and is done after this year.
NASCAR is in serious trouble until they completely revamp the cars and bring some stock aspects back into stock car racing to lower costs.

cost is a huge issue. i don't even know how they go about getting that down.

The Car of Tomorrow sucks, the race stages suck, the season is too long (sucks), frequent changes to the points and Chase format suck, awesome drivers retiring and getting replaced with Kroger brand drivers sucks. Other than that NASCAR is fine.
-
I don't think Jimmie Johnson has a 2019 and beyond sponsor either.
Next year there will be multiple dirt track races that have a better field of drivers than any NASCAR race.

I must add one other issue: Races on NBCSN. How many people even have access to this channel. It has to murder efforts to maintain, let alone expand, the fan base.
That said, I have to be honest. I could get used to the new, young drivers. I can even put up with some of the car changes as they try and reset things to keep it competitive (but it gets really old every 3 years). However, I have absolutely no idea how the F the points system truly works, how this year's playoff format works as it is carried out, and I actually follow NASCAR. If you are disengaging your engaged fan, I can't imagine the impact upon the casual fan.
-
Anyone watch anymore?
-
Does Barstool love NASCAR now or what?
-
Anyone watch anymore?
watch way less. Did happen to catch the end of Chicago and was pretty happy to see Bowman get the win. I don't care for the new package at most tracks, seems to take away most of the skill.
-
Nah, just can't get into it at all. There were an insane amount of very popular drivers that left the sport at essentially the same time. Also guys like Martin Truex are just brutal for mass appeal. NASCAR is very close to getting its regional sport back, the governing body seemingly doesn't want that, although you can't tell with their ridiculous decision making, but most of the diehards would love for it to be the regional juggernaut it was pre Gordon vs. Earnhardt.
-
there is no parity at all in the sport, its jgr and penske with a couple of other cars sprinkled in here and there. The races are waaay too long. Other than like the daytona 500, coca cola 600, and the brickyard they should be shortened. Also no real rivalries anymore, i thought newman and boyer could be fun but nascar said play nice, that and newman is always in like 27th.
-
At some tracks, there's more horsepower under some hoods in the parking lot then under the hoods on the track. WTF?
-
I like the trucks, probably because I like Thursday/Friday/Saturday night racing.
Will watch the NASCAR night races and short track stuff, and enjoy tracks like Kansas and Kentucky.. but more often than not, NASCAR on Sunday afternoons is an afterthought for me.
-
Bristol weekend, truck race was a lot of fun last night. Looking forward to the others.
But man, if Jr and his wife and daughter would've been killed in that plane crash, that would've be incredibly sad. I got sick to my stomach when I saw the first headline and pics. What a scary deal.

Isn't iracing crazy expensive? What's your setup?
-
Isn't iracing crazy expensive? What's your setup?
This will be long.
It is very expensive, yes. I currently have $1,300* in my set up, which is on the simple side compared to most in iRacing. Then roughly $500 in iracing fees (membership, $10-15 PER track, $10-15 PER car/truck). I did a very simple set up due to not having much space currently, but had the PC built to hand the triple monitors when I complete my rig (will be $1,700 more to complete how I want) later. I've found my current set up is not very comfortable for long races.
*Current set up on small office desk:
Single 34 inch LG gaming monitor
Custom built gaming PC w/ graphics card to handle triple monitors
Logitech G29 wheel and pedals (they are fine, but might upgrade at some point)
Future set up:
Single 34 inch w/ 2x 27 inch monitors on side, same PC and wheel/pedals, with this:

Since getting more publicity over the last month, traffic has increased a crazy amount and more of the famous drivers have been on a ton. I've been in races with William Byron, Dale Jr., TJ Majors, Landon Cassill, Grant Enfinger, Anthony Alfredo, and some other Truck series guys.
Before that, had raced some with Larson, Kevin Swindell and a lot of national dirt guys.
It's a blast, and even more fun when racing with the best (and being competitive, frustrating when you're not).
-
I'm assuming you have to know how to drive a manual to do this?
-
I'm assuming you have to know how to drive a manual to do this?
Simple answer, no.
Most wheel/pedal models have "paddle shifters" on the wheel (like Indy cars utilize), which are relatively simple and do not require the use of a clutch. Of course you still have to understand the tac and when to shift up/down, but you're not actually using a traditional shifter to hit gears.
I've dabbled with both, but since I do a lot of dirt stuff with most cars not needing to shift and some not even having a transmission, I do not have the stick set up and only use the paddle shifters.
-
Raced with Enfinger (won the Daytona truck race this year) again last night, he's a cool guy. Told a lot of stories and answered a lot of questions.
A few weeks ago, I ran with AJ McCarron at Homestead. Neither of us qualified so we both started at the very back, me being right behind him. We made our way through the field and I passed him with a few laps left when his tires were gone. He reached out after about how much fun we had, and we talked for a few, he seemed like a pretty cool dude as well.
-
 That's awesome. How long are the races?
-
This will be another long answer, because there's an insane amount of cars/classes/series.
In almost all of them, there is an "open" set up to race, where there's tons of studying and work put into set ups, and if you don't have a really good one, you're not competitive. And then there's a "fixed" where everyone runs the same set up. (For reference, all of the NASCAR events that have been on TV, have utilized "fixed" set ups) "Open" races are much longer.
Glancing at schedules, I'd guess these are the race lengths for officials races (that count towards your license and safety rating)
NIS, NASCAR iRacing Series (NASCAR) - anywhere from 60-100% of laps (that are ran at the actual race/track)
A Class (NASCAR) - Usually about 25% of laps, races last 45 minutes-hour (Currently at Richmond, races are 65 laps in "fixed", "open" runs 110)
B Class (Xfinity) - Usually about 25% of laps, races last 45 minutes-hour
C Class (Trucks) - Usually about 25% of laps, races last 45 minutes-hour (Currently at Richmond, races are 55 laps)
Then you have tons of the smaller pavement series, indy cars, modifieds, late models, legends, silver crown, etc. I'd say the simple answer is 25% of the actual events for official races? And then hosted events range anywhere from 10 laps to 500.

How much does it cost to assemble a sweet-ass rig? Hate watching racing, but I love racing.
-
How much does it cost to assemble a sweet-ass rig? Hate watching racing, but I love racing.
I'd say you have to spend roughly $1k to put together a functioning set up. In saying that, even the most basic setup needs a really good PC/graphics card, and a high quality gaming monitor (these are way more expensive than I thought before getting into this) w/ a really good refresh rate (I don't know a lot about that stuff but this is key). If you have a shitty monitor, you will lack the frames per second that can affect racing inches from another person streaming. Keep in mind, absolutely every single car on the track is streaming, so you (and everyone) need a good internet connection and smooth stream. It's frustrating when people lack one or the other.
So $1k for basic, all the way up to $50-75k probably? Can do a basic desk, up to a racing seat/cockpit w/ a single monitor or 3 monitors. You can do Virtual reality. Can have surround sound and even motion sensor setups.
I'll have $3k in my final rig and it'll be really nice (dare I say, a sweet-ass rig). I'll post pics when it's done. I'd guess most of these guys doing the stuff they're showing on Fox/FS1 have $5-10k in their setups.
You can probably do a Kroger brand version of what I'm doing for $2k-ish.
-
This is Denny Hamlin's. Think I read it's worth about $40k

-
That seems like a cool hobby. I wish I had a friend that would let me play on theirs.
It's a blast, and somewhat addicting (even more so during this time).
If there is a form of racing you like, it's on there and they've done everything they can to get it damn near the real thing.
Rumors of drag racing coming at some point as well.
-
Before the virus hit, there were typically 6-8 thousand people online globally, during peak hours.
Over the last few weeks, it's been over 13k.
It waters down some of the racing, but also brings in the funding to scan/develop new tracks and cars.
-
With that many people on, i'm surprised you actually ever raced with those well known peeps. I guess it was bound to happen depending on how often you got on. Or maybe you're that good it groups skill levels together?
-
Correct. Everything you do in official races is tracked in an iRating (max increase for winning down to max decrease for getting last) and a Safety Rating (if you touch another car, touch the wall, lose control, you lose SR). There are license classes of Rookie, D, C, B, A, Pro. Everyone is pretty much ranked via their iRating, but also need their licenses to race certain classes obviously.
Dirt races usually have anywhere from 10-50 people registered. Each NASCAR division usually has anywhere from 50-250+ registered.
For example, if there are 120 people registered for a NASCAR race, they'll probably do 4 splits and the top 30 in iRating will be first race, the next 31-60 ranked in the second split, 61-90 in 3rd, etc.
I'm ranked pretty high, but over the last few weeks I've usually been bottom of the 1st split, top half of the 2nd, completely depends on number of people registered and the quality, though. When I'm in the top split is when I'm with the best signed in and usually have a few recognizable names, whether through real racing or on the iRacing Coca Cola series.

The Wednesday night race was much better.
So I've been lost in the wilderness without a driver for a while now. Lately i've found myself rooting for Chase alot. I wanted to like Byron, but i'm not sure he's got the talent to make it worth my time. Still love that car tho.

I saw that car and got all nostalgic
-
Sorry not sorry that I don't much care for the 178 MPH speeds at the end of the back straight away at Charlotte, when in days past, the top back straight away speeds at Charlotte were 200-203. Just one example of the "restricted" HP going down market from Daytona and Dega.
They've delayed the Gen 7 car a year. Bigger rims, wider tires, single lug nut, independent rear suspension, but still pretty much "restricted" to the 550HP range. They want more manufacturers in the business and they want the cars to be more like what's in the showroom. Welp, if you want to get back to more like "stock" car racing they also need to widen the parameters and be more "run what ya brung". If you suck and you're always 3 laps down, too bad, do better. Also, they're still running old school power steering, dumb. That kind of power steering is pretty much extinct from modern cars.
It's 2020 and the Gen 7 car is sort of approaching around 2000, but at least it's out of the 80's.
-
I think I agree with you? idk, hard to tell.
One way or the other they need to make these things harder to drive. throttle control needs to make a comeback.
two races a week have been pretty nice, i must admit. Even as boring as a few have been
-
The bodies of the Gen 7 car are said to be be more similar to the cars on the showroom floor and the front spliters are gone. The cars will be higher as well.

agreed. Harvick is leading the points by ALOT. The chase will be worth it this year.
I'm pretty much done with this current package. intermediate tracks are not my cup of tea, except for the restarts.
-
I've enjoyed it as well. Kind of think I'm really starting to like Tyler Reddick.
Also, the driver lineup will be interesting next year.
-
I think Elliot is my driver now. Don't mind Blaney tho and of course whomever drives the #24.
-
I'm weirdly loyal to Chevy, which has been slim pickin' since SHR moved and now w/ Larson out. Have never been able to get on the Chase bandwagon.
Blaney would without a doubt be my favorite if he drove a Chevy (or honestly, anything other than Ford/Penske)
-
Still burned by picking Kyle Larson as my guy, but I guess I'm on the Hamlin/Blaney/Bubba train.
These intermediate tracks seem to have a lot of GWC finishes.
-
whomever drives the #24.
Hendrick will be a fun follow over the next few weeks. (I personally don’t think Byron has IT, but he’s in that seat for 1 or 2 more years)
I think I’d get Gragson to fill JJ’s spot, but Bubba could be a really good fit as well.
Have to imagine it was Larson’s to lose, and well, he damn sure lost it.
-
Rumor mill has been fun lately, and the race Saturday night should be pretty good.
Looking forward to the next couple weeks of announcements and races (Darlington is one of my favorite weekends).
-
Go Jimmy!
-
All it takes is one idiot to ruin a lot of cars at Daytona.
Sucks for Jimmie, but would be cool to see him win one of the last 10. More so than just making the playoffs and being eliminated first round.
And on another note, Kyle Larson is the best race car driving talent on the planet.
-
I screamed in horror when Jimmy got wrecked. We had Jimmy and Bubba racing their way in and it got ruined.
-
MIR, what did i miss with your "jimmy" thing?
Too bad Liberty was on the car for the #24 last night :frown:

Good to see 24 in VL.
Gotta figure out a way to rid the sport of plate racing.
The new car is supposed to lean more towards "run what ya brung", so we'll see.
Also the new car is supposed to have wider tires and more down force. two lacking components that brought about the need for plates, on top of the engines making nearly 800HP, which isn't the case now or on the new car.
Car is also supposed to reduce the side air turbulence and driver is moved towards the center for even greater safety.

Yeah, it's just hard for me to find someone to root for. Jimmie would've been it if he was more competitive.
If Kurt winning pisses off Kyle, I'd be good w/ that.
Dillon, Bowman, Bowyer and Blaney (his family) have some dirt backgrounds.. so I'd be good with any of them, even though Dillon, Bowyer Bowman have basically no chance
-
Guess I'll go for Bowyer. Kind of thinking it's his last year, would be a cool story for a Kansan squawk.
Gross, pass.

Do the Busch brothers legitimately not like each other? I noticed on Saturday they were both in the interview area together outside of the care center and didn't seem to interact while the camera lingered.

From what I've read, it's legit. There were multiple comments made about it them actually being with each other when they were in the booth for the xfinity race (when they weren't even in the same room)

I guess I'm intrigued? Straightaways like Martinsville, corners like Bristol.
Just wish there was a way to fix up places like North Wilkesboro, Rockingham, and Nashville fairgrounds before doing something like that, but I do understand the ownership group side of things.
-
For comparo, this is Martinsville:

I love it. California is routinely such a meh race, only Michigan and The Poconos are more dull.

Nice. I’ve really started to like Jimmie that last few years.
Also, close to being done with my iRacing rig. Tons or wires/cord and need to figure out some wire organizing once I get the longer cords. But here it is:

Not interested in nascar at all but I’d plat cruisin USA on that setup all day
-
Crusin USA was amazing.
That's a sweet setup shooter. If my wife gives me grief about a PS5 I'm showing her this.

Happy to see Bubba leaving RPM, gonna laugh my ass off when they sign Kyle Larson to drive the 43.

Got to assume Bubba will go to the 42 or there will be a shake up at Hendricks once they're all out of the playoffs.

I make sure everything is done for the day before I get on, so in some ways, I might actually be better in my relationship because this rig, ha.
Also, my gf and daughter actually enjoy watching some of the money races I get in that are on youtube or some streams.. so that helps

Just amazing. You get to race for money without the whole danger of being killed while doing so thing.

It's a lot of fun.
There are a lot of real race series and drivers getting upset with the amount of money being poured into the sim community stuff.

Austin Dillon is a lot of fun right now.
Saturday Night will be really good if the PJ1 doesn't ruin it.

Some significant NASCAR insiders seem to think Larson to Hendrick is a real possibility.

Some significant NASCAR insiders seem to think Larson to Hendrick is a real possibility.
It just doesn't make sense. They had a crack at him when Gordon left and he was a great story, now they're going to take him? Talking about shopping from the bargain bin.
-
what sponsor is going to be OK with it? besides Liberty U of course
-
I was thinking the biggest issue was the manufacturers. But supposedly Hendrick has the pull with Chevy.
The scenario I've seen the most is Bowman to the 48 w/ Ally, and Larson to the 88 or another number w/ who knows for sponsorship. No idea what sponsor would want any part of that right now.

Hendrick is like the biggest Chevy dealer in the world, he definitely has pull. I would have thought that liberty would sponsor Larson but with Falwell being gone, I don't see it. If Larson signs somewhere he'll find a sponsor, he can be a rebuttal of so called cancel culture and he can be a redemption story, America is forgiving of stuff like saying the n word. I.actually think he has a better chance of getting a sponsor with a smaller race team, those sponsors don't have to commit as much dough.
-
Yeah, people bring up Larson having sponsors w/ some of his dirt stuff (did not have any in the late model last week), but the difference between sponsoring a NASCAR and sponsoring a 410 sprint car is astronomical.
-
This will be great for the Jordan memes alone. Will be fun to watch

Hell yeah, what a cool deal.

Excited but skeptical. He's going to have to break into a very exclusive club, he has the money but he's going to need to find the people. He's also going to need to have the stomach to lose a lot of money. The sport is very different from when Joe Gibbs jumped in.
-
He weathered the storm of three years of significant losses as a Charlotte owner. $58M over three years. I suspect he'll handle it.
https://www.forbes.com/teams/charlotte-hornets/#53f618cb364f
-
for sure. I'm curious if any owner actually makes money or do they just try to break even?
Also hopefully he lets Hamlin make the talent decisions.
-
Aren't there insiders and even investment groups (like Spire) excited about the future financial outlook and specifically costs with the Gen 7 car, as well as driver bubble burst and cheaper contracts?
Tried to find articles directly saying that but couldn't, so maybe I'm mis-remembering.
-
Word is Bubba has over $20 million per year in sponsorship lined up.
I think they could be a lot of fun over the next few years.
-
bout time they remove a 1.5 miler. Surpirsed it is Chicago though. Chicago and Kansas were built the same time and have similar racing. Kansas really lucked out.

No, Kansas has better attendance and shockingly enough, sponsorship opportunities.
That Bristol dirt race is going to be wild. I think they now have too many road races, but other than that the changes are very good.
-
yeah, need more short tracks which i realize can't be produced at the snap of the finger like a road course can.
-
I think there is significant interest in residential or commercial development on the Chicagoland property. No races there leads me to believe that will most likely happen now.
Kentucky is a head scratcher for me, even though they've destroyed the racing with the PJ1.
So many feelings on Bristol dirt. While it should be entertaining, the track will be garbage. Bringing in temporary dirt makes it very difficult to produce a racey surface. Typically dry, rutted up, with maybe one lane of moisture to play follow the leader. If the surface is there for weeks to get raced in, it should be better, but we'll see what their plans are. I wish they could've found a way to make it happen at a full time dirt track (I understand no dirt facility can host an event like that as is). The most exciting part for me is I'd expect Bristol to host some Lucas Oil/World of Outlaws late models as well as the Tony Stewart All Stars/WoO sprint cars while the dirt is in place.
And yes, just a stupid amount of road courses. COTA seems ok, but 6 is far too many.
-
yeah, need more short tracks which i realize can't be produced at the snap of the finger like a road course can.
The Nashville market will be interesting over the next few years. Would be awesome if they could announce the fairgrounds to be renovated and ready once the super speedway contract is up.... but sounds like the Mayor there doesn't want it to happen.
-
man, eff Denny Hamlin. Went below the line to pass 4 cars. poor 21
-
That was willlllllllddddd. You know full well Denny was forced down there. It's for the best that Denny won, Dibendetto would have been even more sad had he won and been disqualified.

Completely agree.
Bowman over to the Ally 48. Will be interesting to see what they do with the 4th Hendrick car now (who knows what number?).
AB had some pretty loyal sponsorship that even helped in some of his dirt stuff.

It was certainly worth the wait, he made good use of the months he remained publicly silent.

Bowyer to the booth in 2021.
Got to think that's Briscoe's ride now.
-
Bowyer had a pretty solid career. 21 wins across the 3 series, 10 in Cup, and an Xfinity Championship.
I wonder if he'll get more involved in dirt stuff moving forward. Either way, good for him.
-
I wondered what would happen. You could tell the performance just wasn't there for a big ride like he had.
His 07 Jack Daniels car was one of my favorites.

Sounding more and more like Larson to Hendrick. #5 maybe?
Also.

You're probably right, but if he did, it would be a good gamble to self sponsor that car for a few races, to give a chance for his story of redemption to be told, and he's probably going to be running to close enough to the front. Someone will jump on.
-
Probably get Hendrickcars.com and Chevy Goods / Accessories for the first few races of next season.
-
I'm starting to like Chase Elliott.
Not for winning the championship, but racing the Snowball Derby, in Millbridge tonight and the Chili Bowl next month. The way he speaks about grass roots racing (and from the sounds of it he treats everyone really well at these events) and the people involved, is not like the silver spoon raised kids in most of these rides.
Similarly, Riley Herbst paying for the Stewart-Hass Xfinity 98 ride is so rough ridin' stupid.
-
Yeah i'm pretty firmly a Chase guy now.
I hadn't seen the Herbst news. It appears, at least on the twitters, he is not well liked or respected
-
Herbst's family is pretty terrible.
Get it?
Anybody?
Rim shot
-

Lol, I got ya.
I’ve actually heard a lot of people refer to him as Terrible Herbst. Joke kind of writes itself, but still.
-
So Denny and Bubba announced 5 sponsors, and supposedly they have enough funding to already look to field another car.
Pepsi Co. has left Hendrick (no more Mountain Dew for Chase), with Llumar moving over to him for a few. Still no announcements for Larson, but I'm not sure they can announce anything until he's technically allowed to race again? (No idea either way, but that's not until Jan. 1).
Pumped to see Chase in Tulsa in a few weeks. I'll be in the pits for at least a pre-lim night.
-
that's exciting Shooter! will have to take some pics

It’s pretty bad, especially if you’re there all week and sitting in the stands/close to the racing surface. The fumes and the dust generated in that small area, and the infamous chili bowl flu definitely kicks in after leaving.
I have buddies that race so we hangout at their trailers where the air isn’t bad, going into the pit pass only sections to watch a race when we want/can. I only go to one pre lim night and the mains Saturday, so I’ve never had any issues besides a few hangovers.
It’s something to experience, either way. More so now that Chase, Larson, Briscoe, Bowman, Bell, Stenhouse, etc appear like they’ll be involved more.
2 years ago I was in line behind Jeff Gordon at the beer stand. Didn’t bother him as multiple asked for pics. Guys like him, Tony (he works the track all week now), Kenny Wallace and more are very personable during and after the races.
-
Kyle Busch getting in on it now (only sponsoring).

Picture leaked of his 2021 hauler yesterday. Looks like all Hendrick owned companies as primary sponsors, only others are the secondary and tertiary sponsors that primary for others in HMS.
-
interesting. If his performance is good enough this year, i'm sure there will be a few takers for next year
-
Saw Bowman wrenching on his cars last night, pretty damn cool to see what he does for his drivers. He's a likable dude.
Have seen Chase, Ryan Blaney (wearing a Chase Elliott hat and always with a beer in his hand), Ryan Newman, Bowman, Christoper Bell, and Larson so far this week.
Really cool event that should be on everyone's bucket list.
-
great report! sounds like a fun time

J-Mac is always parked here next to my buddy. He’s a cool dude and this is insane to watch, has advanced through 5 features. If you’ve ever heard of Alphabet soup, this is it!
-
interesting. If his performance is good enough this year, i'm sure there will be a few takers for next year
Announced his first primary sponsors (for 4 races) that are not Hendrick businesses today.
Got Freightliner and Cincinnati inc (sponsored Bowman last year)
-
There are a lot of storylines this year. Hopefully the racing isn't too dull.
-
The Bristol dirt race being 250 laps is insanity.
-
Christopher Bell has entered the chat.
Crazy ending to the road course race. I cackled at least 3 times in the last 15 laps. Sad the Elliot didn't make it to the end but glad Logano didn't win.

Chase Briscoe lost his hood!

Have some friends that have known Bell and his family for about 15 years, not the typical rich/pay-to-play story you see these days. Not even a racing family as his dad was a basketball coach, but almost everyone speak highly of them.
It was a big win with the dirt track community.... as well as some of my family in OKC that have been huge fans for a long long time, ha.

Pretty wild how legit TRD was with their development program not too long ago, now it's a joke.

Seeing Kyle B get punted into the wall was my favorite part. His paint scheme was badass though. Lotta Bobby Labonte vibes from it.

He's kind of been a crap show the last year. Was really good after signing that huge contract in 2019, but the whole feel has been weird for a little while now.

I'm more so pointing out the toxic nature, which results have helped that. Think getting told each week last year that he's not good without practice got under his skin as well.
-
Bristol Dirt was pretty fun. One time a year is fine by me.
Annoyed that logano ended up winning. Boring
-
Monday was not great for me, I was way too busy to watch. Sad.
-
Daycare was closed so I had a lot of TV watching to do with little ww.
there wasn't alot of passing up front so that was kind of disappointing to me. But it was different. Kyle B had to pit within the first 5 laps of the race after taking the lead due to mud on his grill. Audibly cackled. Larson was in like 4 wrecks.
-
Big mistake having it during the day. Dirt tracks simply can't keep the needed moisture for racing multiple grooves during the day (for that long of a race).. Even just hours after historic rainfall/flooding in the area.
Track got nasty dry and the best racing was the first 10 laps of the last stage, when they watered the hell out of it (still wasn't enough to hold for long).
Sounds like everyone involved learned a ton, though.. and this might become a yearly event now.
The car setups and tires were way better than I was expecting. Next year will be interesting with the Next Gen.
-
Kyle Larson is an absolutely insane talent.
Honestly don’t think there’s ever been another driver do what he’s doing.
-
@MakeItRain did you move on to a new driver? I couldn't remember
-
Yeah, Denny and Bubba. Happy for Kyle though, spent a decade wanting him at Hendrick, wish they signed him when I was team Hendrick.
Also Jimmy and young Jeff also did what he is doing now. I think there is very little variance in the skills of these drivers, sometimes you get a driver who is slightly better than most of the other field and match him with the best engineers, equipment, and crew and this is the result, this happens at Hendrick a lot.
-
Jeff never ran a full bodied dirt car. A discipline entirely different than what anyone else runs. Also never ran heavy dirt schedule when in full time nascar.
Yes, Jeff was good in open wheel dirt midgets, but Kyle has won multiple nascar races, the biggest dirt midget race in the world, multiple 410 sprint car races against the best in the world, stepped in and immediately won multiple dirt late model races against the best in the world, all in the last few months.
He’s won 50-something races in the last 56 weeks, in a crazy amount of different disciplines. And those are never against weak fields, usually big money events. It’s been an absurd run.
-
Ah, you're speaking of cross discipline racing, that's very true. Don't you think a lot of the younger guys could do something similar if they tried?
-
Ah, you're speaking of cross discipline racing, that's very true. Don't you think a lot of the younger guys could do something similar if they tried?
I do not, but really it’s hard to say if they don’t/can’t make a go at it, ya know. I think Christopher Bell is really damn good and competitive every time he steps in anything, but rarely wins compared to the level Larson does. Elliott did a lot of racing over the winter and it was awesome, but he struggled pretty much each time.
I think a young Jeff Gordon, a younger Bowyer, and even a young Kyle Busch could’ve done some similar things.. but simply because I don’t think anyone else has ever done what he’s doing, it’s hard to say anyone in the past or present could do it as well.
-
Interesting how cyclical this stuff is. Appears Hendrick has some sort of advantage or figured something out lately? Just dominating this year. I suppose to helps to have Larson now and the others are more established.
-
Was talking to a buddy at a dirt track last night, and he had a pretty interesting comparison.
He said he almost compares Larson in the racing community as almost having a Tiger Woods effect right now. Obviously a huge difference on so many levels, and not really comparable if you ask me, but I found it interesting.
If he enters a race somewhere, promoters are getting thousands more fans in attendance, dozens more car counts, added money, and there's a feeling over the whole place that you have to be dialed in and be the best you've ever been to have a chance, raising the competition to levels each venue has rarely seen.... and Larson usually still wins.
-

Your buddy almost certainly knows 100% more about small town dirt track racing more than I do. That being said I cannot wrap my head around the concept that Kyle Larson is having a bigger effect on racing, grassroots and up, than Tony Stewart did 20-10 years ago. The sport was bigger then and Tony was a bigger star in the sport. He was a star in the countries two biggest racing disciplines and he was still on dirt tracks during the week. He was the one that drew guys like Jimmy and Jeff to these events. Sportscenter was covering Tony Stewart winning at Eldora on a Wednesday then kicking ass on a Sunday. I hated the crap out of that dude, but he was a huge star with cross over appeal. Kyle Larson, very disappointingly, didn't have cross over appeal before his incident, and he sure as hell doesn't now. That's not to say that he won't get there, but he isn't yet. I think for motorheads what Kyle Larson is doing now is very cool, but I can't think he is even having a Fernando Tatis Jr. effect, much less a Tiger Woods one.

Oh, I 100% agree with you. His reference is more so about single events and what Larson does to them, not so much grassroots racing across the board.
One thing to note in what you're saying, racing is almost all PPV/subscription/stream based now (DirtVision, FloRacing, IMCA TV, MavTV, Racinboys, etc) and ESPN back in those days held multiple racing coverage contracts including USAC racing where Tony would stand out. ESPN was very supportive of racing across the board back then. CBS/CBS sports has made a few pushes in recent years as well.
Things that happen in racing circles today are typically only known w/ racing fans because I believe legally mainstream/sports media outlets cannot cover those PPV events/highlights besides maybe comments or social posts? Honestly not sure and could definitely be wrong, though.
**A side note because this post just made me think of it. FloRacing has a 24/7 stream and they show a lot of the old ESPN Saturday Night Thunder racing events and my god, the graphics and presentation are a real treat. Have enjoyed watching a lot of those, especially when Gordon or Stewart appear.

Oh man, Saturday Night Thunder
-
Larson wins the NASCAR All Star race in Texas last night, flies to Ohio for speedweeks and wins the All Star Circuit of Champions sprint car race tonight.
Pretty damn cool.
-
He's now won 9 of the 19 races he's been in over the last 5 weeks. (4 Cup, 4 sprint car, and 1 dirt late model).
Ran Top 10 in 9 of the 10 he didn't win.

Either way, Hendrick MS is just absurd right now.

They have the original commercials and everything. Didn’t realize until last night I could pause it. Note this is just a screenshot of the graphic, not a video*** Will get some awesome commercial video or Jeff Gordon mustache shots at some point, though..

Keselowski driver/ownership role in Roush. Will be interesting to follow.
Larson won the highest paying sprint car race of all time last weekend. Against the best sprint car drivers in the world.
Chase raced a midget in OK and was planning on being in Beloit last week, but got rained out.
Bowman running some 410 sprint stuff over the next few weeks.

A damn good looking one at that.

Raced in Meeker, OK Tuesday night. They drove up to Beloit to race Wednesday night, but got rained out. I believe he flew out the next day before the second night of the show at Solomon County Speedway Thursday.
Also, Matt DiBenedetto raced a midget in Garden City the weekend before last.

Anyone ever been to the Knoxville Nationals? It's on my list for sure. Always hear good things.
-
I have not. Until recently, i thought it was in Kentucky. :blindfold:
Also semi-unrelated. Poor Jimmie has been having a rough go in IndyCar. I need to do more reading, but it appears he wrecks alot.

I live 90 minutes away and have never had the urge. I'm going to be honest, the current political climate, particularly people not willing to leave all of their signs and flags at home, makes going to small town tracks very uncomfortable for me. In the 90s and early aughts I used to go to dirt tracks all over Kansas and Missouri but people are just to hostile right now. That track where that dude said a bunch of stuff about "the colored people" was another track 90 minutes away from my house.
I was an hour away from Watkins Glen last Sunday, not doing a damn thing. I was going to go and take my son but u drove through there on Friday and I counted, saw 11 confederate flags, IN NEW YORK!!! 6 thin blue line flags, and I didn't even bother counting the scores trump flags and signs.
I really don't care who votes for who, shooter you've made the rare post at the pit, I know how you lean and we're cool. However all that visible propaganda and now open hostile language, is prevalent at and around a lot of tracks and it isn't welcoming..
Sorry for the rant.
One more thing, the coolest part of the Knoxville Nationals is a couple of days before it starts they always have a charity event at a local go cart track called Slideways, and they always get the biggest NASCAR starts of the time not named Busch or Harvick, guess they are too good for it, and race the go carts.

Either his equipment is awful or he's a bad driver or both because he's frequently out very early. I know why he decided not to race ovals but he's been awful on these circuits.

You've got nothing to apologize for, man. It's noticeable at every single track and it's terrible. I hate that for you.
Being in the pits and at haulers for bigger races, 99% of those involved are really good people (which is still shitty, cause just 1 person can ruin it all, but still). Literally, the more expensive the racing, the better the people are that are involved. They're typically just better, well traveled, well versed people. You get the more "economical" classes of racing going, and the percentage of "good" people involved drops significantly.
Now, no matter the series or level of racing, you cross that gate into the grandstands and the number of garbage humans goes way up, and it's even worse at small town tracks that run full body classes that just bounce off each other like a damn rolling demo derby. It's embarrassing.

Not sure if y'all follow it, but rumor is they're going to jam the numbers as far forward on the cars starting in 22. Talking all the way in front of the A post just off the front tire. The twitter reactions have been pretty funny to follow.
I will say there's a space forward it looks fine, but these will take some getting used to if accurate (the Kurt Busch to 2311 release got people talking)

Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman, Ricky Stenhouse, Kyle Larson, Chase Briscoe, Kasey Kahne, and Christopher Bell all running the Chili Bowl this week.
Kyle Busch wanted to but I think Samantha got pissed that she had already planned a family trip to Disney World this week or something.

Hello all, Have a group who is going to the spring Nascar race in May at Kansas Speedway. Have gotten recommendations to sit on turn 4 about midway between the start and the turn higher up so we can see the back-stretch as well.
Also wondering if Comms are worth the extra money. Thanks.
-
I've been watching NASCAR since the 1983 Daytona 500; and have never been to a live race and I likely never will. I have no appetite for seeing that in person, I just can't figure out what the upside is.

I feel like going to races is for people who aren't really into the nuances of what's happening. I think that auto racing is the sport most dependent on the television broadcast to let you know what the hell is going on. There are 40 drivers and teams on the track at once. There are just so many narratives about what is happening at one time, I don't know how you can get any information about what you're seeing if you're at the track.
-
Oh I agree. Having one of these helps alot. I loved listening to MRN growing up.

The races are very fun to attend. The sound of the cars in person is pretty cool and of course you can't smell the racing fuel from your living room. The best part is being able to watch whoever you please whenever you please. Most of the good racing happens in the middle of the pack and you rarely get to see that on a broadcast. Also, if your a fan of someone who's not running up front, you can still watch them instead of withing for them to get lapped so you can catch a glimpse of them. If you're really wanting to have some inside info, scanners like WW posted let you listen to race broadcast or team chatter.
-
I'm definitely a fan of a driver not up front, lol
-
Guys I haven't watched NASCAR closely for at least 10 years. We are going simply to go. One of our Buddys is a big fan and wants to go so we are all going because why not. I think they have the comms rentals so that way you can listen to the broadcast and listen to team radio the entire race! We are for sure getting the Pre-Race pass and we all got tickets together on the Turn 4 side. Should be interesting to say the least. This will also be the last major sports venue in the KC metro I have to visit!
-
sounds like a great time. Pre-Race are great, ive heard. have fun.
-
I'm definitely a fan of a driver not up front, lol
When I first started following NASCAR in the late 90's, I chose Dick Trickle as my driver to follow and root for. After he quit running, I became a Ken Schrader fan. It was towards the back half of his career so didn't get to see him run up front much either.
-
lolwut nascar penalties continue to be a massive joke and guessing game

Looks pretty bad on the surface. No consistency at all in the process. The appeals people probably got lost looking at JG's thick locks and just let them off easy.

Even worse when you consider that Kaulig and Hendrick we're using that same louvers.

Yeah we had a good time! Wasn't too bad the wind was out of the north at like 15 mph so it was pretty nice day to walk around the pits and out on the track. The race was a lot of fun.

Sure did, and the 6, they finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. What's worse is that they were simply out there in the way, they had no speed. Bubba and Harrison Burton should have been part of the race at the end, with the 24.

I think this is good. n00b question: do cars get totally new paint schemes for every race these days?
https://twitter.com/William_Nagel_/status/1696366009702043888?s=20
-
NASCAR isn't booming like it used to so year long full sponsorships are a thing of the past; so there are many more paint schemes throughout the year. Smaller teams always seem to have a different scheme each race.
-
do cars get totally new paint schemes for every race these days?
They're vinyl wraps. Not technically paint, just design and print.
And they put a new one on for every race since they'll typically rebuild the body after each race.
So kind of, yes!
-
We used to sponsor a cup car
