Making Counter Offers
« on: March 07, 2013, 05:52:19 PM »
Just got a job offer.  It's a solid promotion, but I want to make a counter offer on salary.

Give me guidance on how to maneuver that conversation.  Elite business pros only, please... oh wait, that's everyone on this board.

Would you take the offer as it stands?

What's the minimum you'd accept? 5% more? 10% more?

Just tell them with your experience, knowledge, and background you feel like you're a superior candidate, then make a counter offer of 5-10% more of what they initially offered you. If they won't budge on salary, negotiate moving expenses, signing bonus, etc. I got my company to pay for my mortgage until I sold my house in my old city so I wouldn't have to pay 2 mortgages/rents.

I'd probably take it as it stands.  It's a pretty nice pay bump from what I make now, and they know that. That being said, the job is going to come with longer hours, more pressure to produce, and just generally more responsibility than the joke of a job that I work now.

I'd like an additional 10 percent-ish more, but would be happy with 5 percent more.

They said during my first interview that they were "ready to end the process of searching for someone for this position."  I have another job offer on the horizon (not official, but was basically told that the job was mine when it became available this summer).

But, I only have about 15 months of experience, which isn't exactly a bargaining point that will be good for me.

Just say you accept the offer, but would like to negotiate the salary.

30 percent increase.

Related note: the offer they made me is below average pay for the position by a solid margin (at least according to CNN and a couple other sources that just came up in my google search).

Read up on edmunds.com about how to negotiate the price of a car.  You sound like you are already on the right track.  That is pretty much the same for negotiating your salary at a job.  Good luck!

Roshambo

If you're the last one standing, you get 10% more.  If he's the last one standing, no increase.

Another question: If I put in two weeks notice tomorrow, that will put my last day on March 22, which is the first day of the NCAA tourney.  I requested that day off like two months ago when I bought tickets.  Is it still cool to use that vacation day on March 22 even though it's my last day at my current job?   :dunno:

Don't even respond to their offer.  They'll get the message.
