Coach Mittie doesn't know when to leave a zone. Getting slaughtered by 3s. 65-52. 6:35 left.

MIR,

I liked what I saw out of the team at the game tonight. It IS the only game I've seen all year. Lots of height across the board and youth. I think come senior year this team can really do things. What do you think?

Also, is the staying in a zone when getting murdered by threes a Mittie thing or a wbb thing? ISU had nothing approaching a post game but still we packed it in with a zone. Some quick passing and bam another three. It was disheartening to watch. By my eyes it was a 2-3, but I'm also a dummy.

Thank you for your insight,

SdK.

Also anyone else familiar with the team and what I said, feel free to interject.

Staying in the zone is a Mittie thing. He plays the 2-3 as a primary defense like the Baylor and Syracuse men. He does not have the team to run it the way he wants though, we aren't long and athletic enough. Skilled teams will kill us. ISU was able to get the ball right in the middle of the zone and that absolutely kills you, especially with a team like ISU who likes to spread you and hit threes. Playing a 3-2 could have helped with that some but its obvious that we have not worked on that. To make matters worse is tha when we finally went man it was obvious we hadn't worked on that either because we had the worst man principles I've ever seen in a D1 game, men or women.

Lewis and Martin are the only players I see fitting in the long term plans of this team. But even with Martin and Lewis I'll be interested in seeing what their role will be when the sisters come. If all four of them start at the 2, 3, 4, and 5 we'll be longer and more athletic than we've been since the big 4. I thought we'd see more of Jones, Sheble, and Young but they really haven't played at all.

Lewis is much improved from last season. Still, throughout this season, she is occasionally too hesitant to go to the hoop when she has good opportunities, and at times gets intimidated under the bucket. Again, however, she's much better than she was last season and will only get better.

Martin shows degrees of savvy and intelligence that freshmen rarely display.

Agreed that we don't have enough players who are a good fit for the 2-3, but Mittie can cure that with recruiting--especially if Lanie Page follows her sis to KSU.

I want to stick to the 2-3 bit tonight and will comment more on the rest tomorrow. But why the eff are are playing a 2-3 against a team nailing 3 after 3 without the players to do it? Why are we wearing the players out chasing them down? I didn't get it. I loved the first half, but felt we were outcoached in the second half. It seemed Mittie had no plan for what they brought us in the second half. I feel I saw a legitimate core that I had not seen in a while on the court. But they were being misused. Maybe this is part of coach changing pains, but I saw a lot of good that I felt was misused.

We stuck with the 2-3 because that's his system. It was very frustrating to see and I was going to come on here and rant against inflexible coaching, then he went man and it was an unmitigated disaster. I understand why he insists on just being a 2-3 team because the young players in the program have to know that this is what we do. It's going to be frustrating against Baylor, OSU, and ISU for a year or two but he has to establish that culture within the program. I don't like going exclusively zone and its highly unusual but if that's what we're doing we have to do it.

The reason why ISU was able to exploit that zone is because we don't have the ability to pressure the ball at the top of the zone so that entry pass to 13 feet out in the lane is very easy to make. Next time you watch Baylor see what they do with the ball up top and then compare that with what we did. We don't take away any passing lanes with our zone.

Ok. It was just frustrating to watch. Watching them run all around exhausting themselves only to see the ball move faster

How close was that shot? I don't live in Kansas so I had to listen on the radio.

Not the Lanie Page I saw. She was fine.

edit:  Oops. Brain spasm. Sunny may be right--I mixed up the sisters' names for a minute. Kaylee was fine, I didn't see  Lanie.
