I see the question as one of whether "guys" is appropriate/courteous/respectful in spite of the fact that it can be gender neutral.

The fact that it warrants discussion could be an indication that "guys" isn't the best option.

This just made me realize my wife will sometimes say "guys" to our two daughters. I think it's from her teaching days where she would regularly say "guys" to her class.

I have two daughters and when I'm around my nephews I'm always like "let's go girls".
